I emailed the LDS yesterday citing the example of Janet Chalmers KING to ask if they could tell me what was meant by the 'generated from another record' message. This was the reply I received:
I think this makes sense especially as the parents married just a few weeks later - but you would have thought that they might have generated a CLARK record as well.I opened a copy of the actual certificate of birth on the Web site Scotland's People. It lists Janet as illegitimate, mother's last name Clark. A father is listed, last name King. Since Janet was illegitimate the extractor should has listed her last name was Clark. But I think the extractor "generated" the IGI entry to list the last name a King, not Clark. I can't find a match in the IGI for a Janet Clark or Janet Chalmers so I think this is a reason for the statement in the message portion of IGI. This is why I think the statement is generic. You can see the online copy of the actual certificate at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/. Registration is free but there is a small fee to search the indexes and see the images.
I really will have to shell out & look at the images - trouble is I'm an Aberdonian
Best wishes
Janet
