Hello Frances,

Couldn’t find Daniel and you might already have all this, or it could be the wrong family, so I’m not sure whether it will be a help or a hindrance. First a couple of links. The dates on the Family Group Sheet look a bit odd.

Some info from FreeBMD
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

Marriages Jun 1889
FLETCHER William George
MACKAY Flora Adelaide St. Geo. H. Sq. 1a 787

If this is her they are getting around.
Deaths Sep 1898
Fletcher Flora Adelaide 42 Chester 8a 256

This one looks related in some way and is in your territory
Births Dec 1911
Fletcher Flora A Bent Wakefield 9c 174
Deaths Dec 1912
Fletcher Flora A 1 Wakefield 9c 95

According to a Ancestry search on 1891 census Flora A Fletcher b 1856 Huntingdonshire and husband William G Fletcher b1857 Surrey are living in the County of Cheshire. I don’t have a subscription but couldn’t find any Fletcher kids with a mother Flora on the search.

The district St George Hanover Square spans the boundaries of London and Middlesex. I couldn’t find a relevant Daniel birth in that district. Assuming they were in Cheshire in 1891 this was the only Daniel I could find in London & Middlesex Counties that seemed a possibility.

Births Sep 1888
FLETCHER Daniel Poplar 1c 670

Ancestry 1901 census has a 12yo Daniel Fletcher born Bow London who isn’t living with his parents. On the Genes Reunited 1901 search (which is quite handy although all their others aren’t much to speak of) he is shown as living Enfield Parish. In 1891 he’s living Enfield with possibly a parent so this theory could be kaput.

I hope there’s something useful in there somewhere.

Alan

Thank you Trish & Alan :)

As I said in previous postings I havn't really done much research on the English records.

Can't keep asking here for help-do you think that using Ancestry is the best way to go? :? :? :?

Kind Regards

I found access to the English Census and full BDM indexes the best option for finding English ancestors. Although some of Ancestry's options/advertising are annoying, I have traced all my English families back to c. 1800 with their records. I use very little other than the census and BDM and have NOT added my tree to their data. The advantage over SP is that you can look at any number of records for a single price so getting the wrong record 10 times does not cost any extra.

You might like to try a free trial or check whether access is available at your library before paying for a long-term sub. I only subscribe to the UK data (which also gives me Australia) as I have no family from/to the US

Frances,

My experience with the English side has been pretty much the same as Trish. Their BMD certificates aren’t much use and are relatively expensive (and I have avoided them except to confirm an important link) but the FreeBMD index is great for complementing census data especially if you have a slightly unusual name and a family that stays put.

Some of the Counties are better than others when it comes to research and some of the local authorities are putting BM&D records online. See http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/. And have a look at the sticky ‘England Research Resources’ http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8540

Good luck with it,
Alan
