I have the marriage certificate of John Rankin and Elizabeth McDade 1871. In 1881 I found what must be them living at 67 Burnside St. Glasgow. John is 31 Elizabeth 30. Four children WILLIAM, Elizabeth, Alexander and John. I have the death certificate of Elizabeth who died in 1883 age 32
I searched SP census for John and this motherless family with no success to date. Found William in 1901 working at Singers in Clydebank with wife and children living at 85 Kilbowie Road (Singers Building). I have been unable to find the death of either John Rankin or his son William.
There is quite a story of this family after 1901 but my search is where these two men died. I have also been unable tho find a birth certificate for either one. There was talk of them being Irish and if so where do I go from here.

I don't think that family in 1881 is yours.
I think the mother in that household is Elizabeth Wilson.
What was the address given when Elizabeth died in 1883?

Hello Lizzie,Lizzie wrote:Hi Nelmit
The death certificate I have for Elizabeth Rankin ms McDade looks like 206 Eastbank or Castlebank Street, Partick. The marriage certificate has John an Ironmoulder labourer and married 1871 Blythswood, Glasgow John is 23 abd Elizabeth 22.
Lizzie
There is a Castlebank Street in Partick.
A search in 1881 doesn't find them there. In fact I can't locate them in 1881 at all. What were their addresses in 1871?
Perhaps they were in Ireland.

Re: Searching for John Rankin
Hi Lizzie,
I agree with Annette on it being the wrong family in 1881....
Apart from mother's surname looking very like it's Wilson, hubby John is a journeyman slater.
--
Two years ago a TS member very kindly advised me that,
the name MacDAID / McDADE could also be as MacDEVITT or DAVITT.
That info most certainly helped in a rather protracted problem!
I was pointed to do a surname search on the very useful Irish Ancestors page at...
http://www.ireland.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm
--
I know you have this marriage of John with Elizabeth as McDADE,
but maybe worth checking out these 2 children with mother as McDIVETT.
Perhaps you already have?
John RANKIN & Elizabeth McDADE
Marriage: 07 FEB 1871, Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Parents of children below are...
John RANKIN & Elizabeth McDIVETT
Joseph RANKIN - Birth: 29 MAR 1872 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
William RANKIN - Birth: 21 DEC 1873 Anderston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
--
But so far it's not helping any in finding the family in the censuses....

Yes I saw those children too and thought it highly likely this is Lizzie's family especially since John and Elizabeth stayed in the area when they married and there is no sign of any children born to a John Rankin and Elizabeth McDade.
Glad
Lizzie, who registered Elizabeth's death in 1883?

Re: Searching for John Rankin
Hi Lizzie,
Yes Annette, a wee mystery so far in 1881, but perhaps we are narrowing it down?
Did Joseph (b.1872) become a Robert?
Makes more sense as that is John's father's forename.
This John RANKIN (32) widower, married Martha BAILLIE (31) on 5 June 1883 in Partick.
His address was 206 Castlebank St, Partick.....
--
1891 census 646-3 Ed 4 p 36 (Govan - Partick)
10 Walker St.
John RANKIN, head, 38, fitters labourer, b Ireland
Martha RANKIN, wife, 30, ------------------------b Ireland
Robert RANKIN, son, 19, ventilating engineer, b Glasgow
William RANKIN, son, 17, rivet heater, b Glasgow
John RANKIN, son, 15, app. tinsmith, b Glasgow
Isabella RANKIN, daur, 10, scholar, b Glasgow
--
Later, Sorry Lizzie, i'm thinking i've given you old info...
Reason being that John, Martha, and Isabella are with William in Clydebank 1901...!
