New York Times Archive (free) / question re New York BMD

Post by grannysrock » Fri Oct 12, 2007 7:09 pm

Hi apologies if this has been mentioned before , but the Naw York Times Archives have been made free to view ( up to 1922 ? ) .

http://www.nytimes.com/

Now I am not American, but I did find something last night that got me rather excited.

Anyway trubble is , I need to find out deceased's father's parents to make certain of my connection to him and his ancestors . His father's name was Malcolm MacGregor , he was a distiller and was born about 1797-1798 , and must have died between 1870 and 1880 . I have in NY on the 1850, 60 and 70 censuses . From the ages of his children , he must have been there by 1827 . Now I have a MM born n 1797 who sailed to NY in 1817 ...

I did not find an obituary for the father , and when I tried to find about NY death certs , I could only find a site for 1881 onwards - can anyone suggest how I might find out his parent's names for certain ?

Hi Sally

I have had a look at the site and found something i want to read. Did you subscribe to one of the two titles they tell you to and give your credit card number ?
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

TRacey

I did register ( don't know whether necessary or not ) , but I did not give my credit card details.
Were you trying to view something after 1922 ? I think they show you all results when you search , but if you click on the the results from the earlier era you are not asked to pay , but the later ones you are.

This is a link to the blog where I found out about it.

I also think if you go to the main site its hard to find the archive.
This might take you straight in :

Hope it works for you - free resources are so welcome !.

Thanks Sally,

Works for me and I didn’t have to register. It’s an excellent resource.

If the New York Times can do it, why can’t The Scotsman? If the London Times is so readily accessible to everyone why isn’t The Scotsman? If the British Library is digitising old newspapers to make them available free to all students will this include The Scotsman? Old Australian newspapers will soon be made available free online to everyone but will The Scotsman?

Eventually, a great proportion of the news stories which appear in The Scotsman will be able to be read by anyone, anywhere on the planet, entirely free, except that they won’t be reading them in The Scotsman, but in the New York Times, or the London Times, or any one of a great number of other newspapers.
