Another Wharton

Post by Dennis » Sun Nov 18, 2007 11:40 pm

Hi & thank you for the Mary Wharton info.

I've got another one Dorothy Burton Wharton; b1840 District Kendal
Volume 25 p455. (??)

I can't find anything that has her with a middle name (which is what I'm looking for)

SP is so much easier:)

Hello Dennis,

I wouldn’t worry too much about the absence of the middle name as the completeness of these records was reliant on the attitude of the person keeping the register. Many of the records have only an initial for the middle name and I’m sure some of the clerks involved didn’t think it necessary or couldn’t be bothered. In addition to that extra names may have been given at a later baptism.

As long as you’re reasonably certain that you have the correct entry you could apply for a certificate. I’d be inclined to get as much as possible supporting information together before I bought a relatively expensive certificate. If you click on the red Information button on the FreeBMD home page you’ll find information about English Certificate content.

That 1840 birth in the District of Kendal is a bit of a worry because there’s a death three years later of a person with the same name in the same district. I would suspect the child has died unless it happens to be her mother. Does either scenario match the other information you have, does the place of birth you have for her fit into the Kendal District and do you have plenty of other evidence to support that birth year?

Hope that’s more of a help than a hindrance,
Alan

If this is Dorothy, I assume she didn't die in 1843 - no sign of a middle name. (There is a 65 year old Dorothy Wharton living in Derbyshire 1841 - could she be the one who died - a bit of a distance away, I guess)

Westmorland Kirkby Stephen District East Ward Union Workhouse HO107/1157/3 39/2 and 3
Margaret Wharton 40 pauper farm servant Y
Jane Wharton 15 pauper farm servant Y
Margaret wharton 11 pauper Y
George Wharton 9 pauper Y
James Wharton 5 pauper Y
Dorothy Wharton 1 pauper Y

(3 pages of folks in the workhouse)

John Wharton head Mar 67 shepherd Westmoreland Orten
Margaret do wife mar 54 Yorkshire Sedburgh
Dorothy do daur 11 Westm. Kendal
Mary do daur 7 Westm Noteby/Naseby?
Not sure why Margaret has "born in county Y" in 1841, although the 2 counties border each other - perhaps a boundary town

Lane House - Kinson family Robert 47 Mary 46, 8 children, father-in-law
Dorothy Wharton serv U 20 Serv Westmoreland Kendal

Dorothy was transcribed as niece - thought that may be useful - but definitely listed as servant

Trish

Did she marry a William Dixon - possible marriage Jun Qtr 1862 Ulverston
and they appear 1871 1881 1891 if you want the information

In 1901 she is Dorothy E Dixon (no sign of the Burton) - mother-in-law living with daughter Margaret & husband. Another daughter Elizabeth is also there. Let me know if you require the full details
