Trip to Salt Lake City

Post by CathieL » Tue Nov 27, 2007 1:17 am

Hi everyone,
I hope you don't mind my sharing this story with you.
I live not too far from a family history library but the only two days they are open just happen to be the days I cannot go so I have only been able to use the online records. At the beginning of November my son, who is stationed in Texas, called to tell me he had to attend a five day conference where he was to receive an award and as this was to be in Salt Lake City would I like to go as his guest!!! Needless to say I did not think twice about it. I had a great time, nice hotel, beautiful weather and Temple Square was just a short walk away. My son was able to come with me to the library twice when he did not have any meetings to attend. His comment was "this is fun and very interesting but much harder work than I thought". I found the birth certificate of my notorious William Kelly ( who could never make up his mind if he was Kelly or Connolly). His three sisters are in the online records but for some reason he isn't and he had me going round in circles for a long time. His mother is my great grandmother but I could not find her marriage to William's father. I could not find the birth of her first son, Patrick Connolly who was my grandfather, nor her marriage to his father but I was able to eliminate a huge number of potentials and all in all I am very pleased with my unexpected trip and my findings. I also attended the award presentation dinner and it was really nice. I will upload a couple of pictures so that you can see very small me next to the huge library and also my son and I after the awards ( that part is just a very proud mother bragging. :D)
A couple of days after I got back to Florida it was snowing in Utah!

Hi Cathy,

Lovely photos.

The library at Salt Lake City is very impressive. I remember my first trip there, I was not prepared for the vast amount of information they have available.

If you are ever there on a Thursday, you can see the Mormon Tabernacle Choir practice.

Regards,

Ina
