Your English records expertise, please.....

Post by Anne H » Fri Dec 21, 2007 6:59 pm

After finding a DC for John Patterson Hogg in Glasgow, I found he had remarried and had another son. After failing to find an MC or a BC for son James Patterson Hogg in Scotland, I decided to try the English indexes on Ancestry…thought I had the MC…

John Patterson Hogg in Tynemouth 1899, 2nd qtr. Vol 10b, Page 392
Dorothy Phillips in Tynemouth 1899, 2nd qtr. Vol 10b, Page 436

…then my excitement changed to disappointment  when I realized the page numbers were different.

Are these actual marriage records, or are these records of banns being recorded at different times?? Just hoping it’s the latter [-o<

Anne H

Hi Anne
The English indexed records, post 1837 are all, as far as I'm aware, actual marriages. A Church may have recorded banns, but the state recorded the legal marriage.

Accroding to FreeBMD these are the other people on the same page (where you would expect to find the spouse):

Marriages Jun 1899

Bridges Arthur Woodruff Kendal 10b 392
Davison George Tynemouth 10b 392
Hogg John Patterson Tynemouth 10b 392
Robson Frances Ann Tynemouth 10b 392
Thompson Ann Margaret Tynemouth 10b 392
Thompson Jane Margaret Tynemouth 10b 392

Marriages Jun 1899

Cassell Thomas George Tynemouth 10b 436
Mackie William Tynemouth 10b 436
Mills Jane Tynemouth 10b 436
Phillips Dorothy Tynemouth 10b 436

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Anne,
His wife was Frances Ann, if you look at them in the 1901 census... Sorry! Was Dorothy Phillips supposed to be his wife's name?

Regards,
Sarah

Thanks Lesley...looks like it's back to the drawing board with this one :( You'd think a solicitor would have had the good sense to leave me with a wee clue...or maybe he had the good sense not to leave any clues :x

Hi Sarah,

Yes...according his DC, second wife was Dorothy Phillips and the informant was the new son, James Patterson Hogg :(

I haven't found any trace of any of them on the 1901 census either :(

Thanks for looking :)

Anne H

Ann

When did he die? If there is a chance his second marriage was in England in 1910 or later it is possible that a) it is not included in the database on Ancestry, whish is incomplete and is particularly thin after c1915; or b) even if it is included, the indexes from mid-1910 onwards only include middle initials, not middle names, so you would not find him if you searched on the full name.

FWIW, the John Patterson Hogg who married in 1899 was one of two of that name who were almost exactly the same age, and were uncle and nephew. The family seems to be entirely rooted in Northumberland. So this may just be a coincidence, and not connected with your family at all?

Hi Audrey,

He died 8 July 1933 in Glasgow. I did notice the other record in Morpeth but couldn't come up with a matching Dorothy Phillips for that either...I sort of knew the two records for Tynemouth were too good to be true. :(

Many thanks for the information.
