Good old GR!

Post by ellenavon » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:56 am

Hi All

In spite of all their faults, GR do sometimes come up trumps.

My new year resolution is to reduce the clutter in my life, both physical and mental

As part of addressing this, I decided the other day to trawl through my 16 pages  of hot matches on GR and thin them out.

I have a particular line with which I have been struggling since I started this lark over 3 years ago now. My great grandmother Betsy Glen. As she was born illegitimately, I had been banging my head against the proverbial brick wall. She was born to a Jessie Glen in 1878, and I thought I knew the history of every Jessie Glen on the planet, without managing to connect any of them to Betsy. In fact a few kind souls on here have also been involved in the search for Betsy and Jessie a couple of years ago.

But - in trawling through the hot matches, two seperate ones came up, each just with one match, one for Betsy Glen and one for Jessie Glen. I did not dare to hope that there really would be a connection, but sent messages anyway.

Boy did I get a result - or in fact 2!!!!!

The gentleman who had Jessie Glen thought mine was not his relative but gave me the nugget that his Jessie had married Joseph Townsley. When I checked them out, I discovered that it is in fact my Jessie, and now have 3 generations back from her.

The second one, Betsy Glen is even more exciting, as I have now traced forward and found my dad's first cousin alive (plus another 6 still alive). My dad never knew any of his 11 aunts and uncles as my granny lost contact with the family, and we've been trying for years to track them down. Now we have made contact, we are hoping to arrange a meeting.

All of this in the space of 4 days since checking out those hot matches.

So never say die - and check out even the 1 match ones before discarding them.

Ellen.

Hi Ellen and congratulations.
I too found a second cousin in York this week and after four emails through GR he made contact by phone. Makes you feel good doesnt it, all the hard work finally starts to pay off.
I amazed my cousin with all the info I had on his part of the family, as he didnt seem to know much, and as he has photos of my grandmothers sister etc, we are going to swop info, as I have no photos of my Dads biological family. So guess who is a happy bunny.

Regards
Anne :D

Well done Ellen

Like you I didnt have much luck when I first joined GR. But thanks to a hotmatch with a distant cousin, I found a parent/grandparent for one of my maternal lines. This simple find ended up sending me back to the mid 1600's :D
From the initial link it snowballed down a line or three, ok I took a bit of ribbing from some friends (family history) about the Flucker surname and the fact that they "kept it in the family" :D But I now have a contact with a 5th cousin or is it 6th :D , as we both have a direct line of the same 5 sets of grandparents. Not counting the other distant (removed) cousins I have contact with. :D
Yes the hotmatches can be a pain at times, but I have learned to have a look at them all now. Don't give up is all I can say to others, you never know what can crop up. Now! lets hope I can get some on my dad's line!

Hi Jean

Yes, I still go back every now and again and have a go at wee Jean. No luck yet, but won't give up on her.

Cheers

Ellen
