In the archives of Corstorphine Trust there is a letter from Cumberland Hill asking for a small sum of money from The Corstorphine Friendly Society.
Cumberland along with his wife was intending to set sail for The Cape of Good Hope to stay with his son(I think he was also called Cumberland)
At the time of writing the letter Cumberland was about 73 years old .
I would love to find out if indeed Cumberland arrived in the colony, any information would be appreciated.

Hello Frances,
This is the item you’ve referred to.

Have you seen this 2003 Rootsweb post regarding Cumberland’s family in South Africa?

And her other post (not sure they’re linked)

The Hill family gets a mention in this book. I’ve no idea how much info is in the book but probably mainly to do with son John.

John Hill's occ. was a Seaman he died c 1841 in Edinburgh.

Hello Beachcomber and welcome to TalkingScot.
I had a bit of a fossick around to see if I could find anything else but didn’t do any good.
The best of luck with your research. If you get stuck don’t forget that there are people on this forum who will do their very best to help.
