Free access to 19th C British Newspaper Collection

Post by Chris Paton » Wed Mar 12, 2008 3:29 pm

For a couple of weeks now, I have had access to the British Library 19th Century Newspapers Collection, which holds digitised copies of all 19th C editions of the Glasgow Herald, the Caledonian Mercury, the Aberdeen Journal, the Belfast Newsletter, and dozens of English and Welsh titles.

Whilst my access has been through my university, I have been informed that there is a limited trial available online to the public, which can be obtained by visiting http://gale.cengage.com/servlet/FreeTri ... Newspapers

Further information on what is contained in the database can be located at http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programm ... n_bln.aspx

Well worth a look! :)

Thanks, Chris!
I can hardly wait to begin hunting :D I filled out the form and submitted it... now have a screen thanking me for submitting my request–– what happens next? No indication how I actually access the database :? I keep waiting for some sort of password to arrive in my inbox, or–– how does it work?

Sorry to be so dense

Thanks for that link, Chris :)

However like Sarah I'm befuddled and bemused :?
What happens after registration? How do I access anything?

Regards,
Meg

Hi Sarah,

I'm afraid I have no idea! My access is through my university, but I got this from someone on another forum. She seems to be saying that the version of this that she can access is a browse version for the newspapers in question, which sounds different to what I am using, as I have a search screen where I can do keyword searches etc. I didn't want to keep this to myself though, as it is an absolute treasure, but I don't know how this particular trial subscription works externally, so please come back and share your experience if you get up and running! :)

Likewise, Sarah.

But I'm not holding out much hope - and I have to go and collect my son from school now!

Did anyone put in an institution name up at the top of the registration page? It's one of the items in red meaning it's required. Gale may not offer things to individuals. Also, if you look at the left side of the registration page you'll see many things to click on including "Free Trial". Looks like you can request a free trial of just about any Gale product but they all require the institution name on the form.

Looking for: Clerihew, Longmuir/Longmore, Chalmers, Milne, Barclay in Newhills,
Munro, Cadenhead, Raitt, Ririe/Reary

Hi Chris,

Thanks for me too :) Unfortunately, I'm no wiser than Sarah or Meg and knowing me with computers and links, I doubt if I'll ever figure it out

Carol...I didn't put an instution name in but I still got the message thanking me for the request :?

Regards,
Anne H

I did put an institution name, since it seemed to be required. I put the institution where I used to work before I retired  Seemed my only claim to institutionalization, until they come to get me in the white coats

Cheers,
Sarah

Hi All

I have also applied for the Free Trial, and received the same screen as all of you have. :(

Sarah, you are always good for a laugh! :D

It could be that you must be part of some institution. Too bad that TS isn't thought of as an institution.
