Hi Maggie
Have you tried a search on Free BMD? As far as I'm aware, that is where the ancestry listings come from too. www.freebmd.org.uk

Or what about the IGI at www.familysearch.org ?

Best wishes
Lesley

Maggie

I may be being very stupid but I can't see this chap on any census nor for that matter can I see the birth of anyone of that name in York in 1874. Am I missing something?

Hi Maggie:

Restricting the search on Ancestry, to 4 stars or better, there are quite a few George E Brook (most of the born in Yorkshire) in the 1901 English census. These include no entries for George Emanuel Brook, but there are many for George E within 1874+/- 5 years. Several have wives including Elizabeth J., Alice and Annie.

If you knew his approximate arrival in Australia, perhaps some of the ships/passenger lists might be of help.

Hello Maggie,

This looks like him on FreeBMD

Births Mar 1874
BROOKS George Emmanuel York 9d24

Marriages Sep 1904
Brooks George Emmanuel York 9d79
Hughes Annie York 9d79

You’ll also find births of their children George, Laurence and Nora on FreeBMD

One of their children (Parents: George Emmanuel/Annie) died NSW 1972 but you probably have all that.

Is he one of this 1901 trio born 1874 +/- 2 in Yorkshire? If so the Ancestry transcription might be a bit off. Searching here can be useful
http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
Name, Age, Where born, Administrative county, Civil parish, Occupation
George Brooks, 26, Huddersfield Yorkshire, Kingston Upon Hull, Holy Trinity & St Mary, Commercial Clerk
George Brooks, 25, Yorkshire Swinefleet, West Riding Of Yorkshire, Swinefleet, Railway Labourer Goods
George Brooks, 27, Doncaster Yorkshire, Yorkshire West Riding, Doncaster, Coal Carter

None of the birth towns seem to fit to York District. There’s a list here http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/york.html

Hope this helps,
Alan
