Wainwright Family

Post by Dennis » Tue Jul 22, 2008 5:31 pm

Hi:)

I have a couple that left Liverpool May 16, 1894 on the British Princess and arrived Philadelphia on May 28th. However, I don't know what became of them, they were newlyweds William Wainwright and Annie Catherine Twigg.

Dennis,

Ancestry has them as William and Mrs. Wamworghs arriving on the Britsh Princess. If you look at the original, it's Wainwright.

1900 Census: William, Annie, William E. age 4 and Annie age 1 are living on Gray's Ferry Road, Philadelphia. William is a tobacco merchant.

1910 Census: William, Annie, William E. age 14 and Annie L. age 9 are still on Grays Ferry Road and William is a storekeeper--cigar shop.

Don't have time to go any further with this right now. Maybe someone else can pick them up in 1920.

Hi Dennis,

Okay, I'll grab the baton from Carol :D

In 1920 William, William E and Annie L are still in Philadelphia. William Sr has a cigar store. He is listed as married, not widowed, but his wife is not in the household. Perhaps she was on a visit back home?

In 1930 he is widowed, still at the same address. His children are not living with him, but there is a Hannah Kurtz, listed as niece. She is 47 and was born in Pennsylvania. William C Kurtz, age 44, is also there... his relation to the head of household is a scribble. Probably he is the niece's husband.

William Jr. is boarding at another house in Philadelphia. He is still unmarried and is an automobile salesman.

William Jr's WWI draft registrations says William Edwin Wainwright was born on 31 March 1896 in Philadelphia.

That's it for now! Who else wants a turn?

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Dennis,

There’s some useful information about Pennsylvania records at http://www.cyndislist.com/pa.htm#Records

There may be newspaper articles or notices concerning this family in Ancestry’s Historical Newspaper Collection which contains many US newspapers http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/ ... fault.aspx
There are a number of Pennsylvania papers there although not necessarily Philadelphia.

You may find this page useful.
http://blog.genealogybank.com/2008/05/p ... nline.html

The Record Search link has Philadelphia City Death Certificates 1803-1915 and Philadelphia Marriage Index 1885-1951 but only to 1915 at present.

The paid newspaper trial looks reasonable, may have expired, but you would have to remember to cancel before the end. I haven’t used it myself. There appears to be some William and/or Annie Wainwright articles or notices in the Philadelphia Inquirer in the 1896-1922 period which is when its old archive ends

Hope this helps,
Alan

Hi:)

I've got the 14 day trial for Ancestry.com. I see what Sarah was talking about in the 1930 census about Hannah & William Kurtz.

How do I search for the death of William Edwin Wainwright? The last I see of him is his ww2 reg. card in 1942 when he was 47. Are there military records of where he served?

dazed & confused. dennis

Dennis,

There might be something useful on this page http://www.deathindexes.com/pennsylvania/index.html

There may be info about his WW2 record at US National Archives.
http://www.archives.gov/research/ww2/

Or for WW1.
