Elspet McDonald after 1871.....

Post by Jean Jeanie » Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:43 pm

I found Elspet McDonald in 1861. Aged 35, unmarried, Birthplace Abernethy Inverness shire. Census Parish of Cromdale Inverallan and Advie. With her were her 2 children. Alexander Cameron aged 11 and Jane Fraser aged 8.(Jane is my husband's grandmother)

I found Elspet McDonald in 1871. Aged 45, unmarried, Birthplace Abernethy Inverness shire, Census Parish of Cromdale. She was living on her own.

Her daughter Jane Fraser married Alexander Fraser in 1877. Jane's mother is shown as Elspet McDonald. Not shown as "deceased" so assume that she is alive at this time.

I can't find Elspet in 1881 or 1891

I looked for deaths from 1871 - 1881 for ages 45-55. There were 2 in Moray - neither of them was her.

Just in case she was alive after 1881 I searched for her death from 1881-1901 ages 55 - 75. There were 16 hits. Two were likely. I viewed them but again not her.

Any suggestions as to what to do next?

Jean

Hi Jean

Why didn't I think of looking for her with the Christian name Elsie? This could well be her. Correct age, birthplace and census place. She would probably be on her own as she was in 1871.

Brain must be addled with this hot weather. :?

Hopefully I can now look for her in 1891/1901 and then narrow down a date of death.

Many thanks
Jean

Hi Jean

To be totally honest....I didn't think of Elsie at first either! I though she might have married and was hiding under a new surname (Stranger things have happened  ) Anyhow...was about to give up and went looking for the daughter Jane just to see where she and Alexander were. Not sure I found their household but it looked like it could be them....and in it was a 5 year old daughter named Elsie MacDougall (Fraser).....and then slowly the light got a bit brighter  What if she was named for her Grannie!! A search for Elsie was quick work after that!

I'd take some of your heat wave back over this way please.....it's raining buckets and feels more like late March today....

Good luck!
Jean

Hi Jean

Yep you found Jane and Alexander and family(living at Inverlaidnan)Elsie Fraser was Jane's illegitimate daughter to a William McDougall!

It took me 6 months to find Elsie Fraser's birth because she was registered as Elspet!! named after Elspet McDonald.

I really should have thought about the name again

Elsie Fraser is my husband's Aunt b. 1875!! Hard to believe it is only one generation away. Elsie was the eldest, strictly speaking, half sister to the rest of the family. Lewis was the second youngest in the family b. 1891 and was my father in law. Lewis was 43 when my husband was born. Hence the huge gap in the years.

Off to SP now to see if I can find her in 1891/1901

Hi Jean

Just to keep you posted.

Found Elsie mcDonald in 1891 With her is Elsie McDougall grandaughter!

Found Elspet McDonald in 1901. With her is Elsie Fraser grandaughter!

Only found the 1901 because I searched for Els* McDonald. The census is very clearly Elspet but it has been indexed under ELSPHET

I wish my lot would stop changing their christian names and surnames. :?

Many thanks for the pointer in the right direction.

Hi Jean

After a struggle I have now found her death. Which in turn gives me her parents. Informant to her death was George Cameron married to grandaughter. George Cameron was Elsie Fraser's second husband :D

They got me with the name again though. Changed the McDonald to Macdonald.

A very lucrative day thanks to you.
