68th Regiment of Foot

Post by lpearce » Mon Aug 25, 2008 6:12 pm

Hi,

Can any military experts help me with this.

We have a Thomas Walker who is married in 1860 to Sarah Jessie Hutchinson in India. Sarah’s father was at the time a Private in the 68th Regiment of Foot.
In 1861 Thomas is a Corporal in the 68th Foot when his son is born in Rangoon, Burma
by 1869 he is a Sergeant Major in the 68th Regiment of Foot when his other son is born in Jamaica, West Indies.
After that we have no information of Thomas as Sarah and the children return to Perth Scotland.

Am I right in thinking the 68th Regiment of Foot is one of the early regiments of the Durham Light Infantry.

Is there any way of finding out more about Sergeant Major Thomas via the internet.?

Regimental numbering is never ever simple !!

See http://www.lightinfantry.org.uk/regimen ... foottl.htm for the history of the DLI.

Worth a search in The National Archives Index for Thomas Walker in the WO series of records, as they may have got up to the 1860s by now.

If there is a matching reference, then email TNA and ask for a quote for the papers involved, but note that there could be many other papers not covered by the specific reference.

If TNA's index hasn't reached the 1860s yet, you'll need to use a military records expert; PM me and I'll give you details of the one that I use. But be aware that there can be several weeks between my visits to this DG!!

Hello Les,

I’ve posted hereunder the history of the 68th from 1800-1881 as provided by regiments.org. The site is currently dead but the file is available via a previous posting. In 1869 this list has Ireland not mentioned on the other list and Jamaica not shown at all. I guess it would depend on whether the whole regiment was at any one place at any one time.

If you’re interested in reading up on the 68th you’ll find some references to it in the London Times that might give a clue as to why any of them may have been in the West Indies in 1869. Here’s where you can get access to the London Times and also the old New Zealand papers might be of interest

The 19th Century British Library Newspaper database has many newspapers which frequently published a monthly? column “Stations of the British Army” from “The United Services Magazine” setting out where each regiment was stationed and its depot. If you let me know a limited number of years you’re particularly interested in I could check. I was wondering when the wife next appeared on the radar in Perth after 1869, was it in 1871 or later.

Hope this helps,
Alan
