unusual english birth.....

Post by Hil » Fri Aug 12, 2005 4:31 pm

hi, I have a Charlotte Munro born in Durham, Sunderland, England in abt 1866. Charlotte's parents, Alexander Munro & Elspeth Douglas both from the highlands of Scotland were married in 1859. They had three children in the Rosskeen area in the four years after their marriage, then charlotte was born in England. After Charlotte, at least six children were born in the Rosskeen area between 1868 & 1883.
All census records I have seen state that she was born in England although I have been unable to find a record of it (either in england or scotland).
My family seem to be common ag labs & ploughman etc who stayed in the same area for many years. Is it likely that Charlotte was not their natural child? Could she have been taken in from another family member or something similar??
any suggestions welcome ](*,)

Hi Hil,

A bit of a problem! Does the 1871 census show Charlotte as born England?

Hello Hil,

the 1871 census shows that Charlotte was born in Sunderland. A search of FreeBMD for all Charlottes born in Sunderland during 1865 and 1866 brings up Charlotte Mounro in the June quarter of 1866.

Since the IGI does not have her birth, the only way to check her parents' names is to order the certificate at £7.

Regards,

John

Hello Hil

I wouldnt worry too much about it, the family could have gone south for many a reason. They could have gone down with the laird who might have had farm property down south, if they didnt own their own land.

I have a great granny Isabella Galloway born in Alverstoke in 1859, yet parents were born and married in Scotland, and the rest of her siblings were born in Scotland.

Charlotte Munro

Thanks all, don't know how I didn't find Charlotte in my searches before (even given the extra "o" in Munro  )
I will go to the local genealogy society tomorrow & check on Charlotte's parents (I love saying that as I've not long moved from a small rural town with no access to anything!)
If the parents check out, as I expect they will, I will order the cert & check out the father's occupation.
I can trace charlotte with her family until 1891, aged 25, so I guess my next step is to follow up on a marriage
thanks for the help
