My information tells me that when the Dingwall's of Kildun lost their lands in Scotland they came to Canada and settled near the Raisin River and the town of Williamstown, ON. My question is what are the names these Dingwalls. I aslo understand that they were well known and well respected in the town of Williamstown.

Hi Piobreached:
The 1901 census shows 122 Dingwalls (and variations) in Ontario. Of those 45 are in Glengarry County, where Raisin River and Williamstown are found in the same area as Charlottenburgh.

Have you looked in any of the immigration sources for Canada? What years would they have been likely to arrive?

From what I can determine they arrived in Canada likely in the mid 1700's.

Hello Jack,
You’ve probably already seen this.
In this book there is some information about the Dingwalls, John and James, who settled in Williamstown. Their father, Alexander, resided at Knock-el-Granish.

Same book, but in full, about three quarters of the way through.

A bit more here, gives place of birth as Strathspey.

Hope that helps,

Re: Dingwall of Kildun
Many thanks for that Alan. I had not seen the referenced book before but that will no doubt answer my questions.
Thanks again
