Hello All,
I don't know whether anyone on here will be able to answer this query but here goes!
My dad served in the Royal Navy in WW2, mainly in the Arctic convoys.
I have all his service records etc and the box his medals were sent to him in.
The accompanying piece of paper says there are enclosed 4 "stars, medals, clasps or emblems" enclosed. I have The Atlantic Star, The 1939 -45 Star and The 1939-45 War Medal.
So my question is, what could be missing?
He didn't appear to serve in any other theatre of war for the requisite time, so could it possibly be a Good Conduct Medal?
Best wishes,
Meg

Thanks, Adam.
But I thought that was for civilians?

I don't know much about medals I'm afraid but I've seen images of servicemen wearing them. It says "4 stars, medals, clasps or emblems" Does either the Atlantic Star or the 39-45 Star have a clasp?
Thanks
Adam

Adam,
No sign of any bars or clasps! But perhaps this is the most likely bit to have been lost!
The Defence Medal is all a bit ambiguous isn't it? Or is that just me??
Thanks for all your thoughts, anyway.
Best wishes,
Meg

Hi Meg,
This Ministry of Defence page has quite good links to the criteria for WW2 medals and the France and Germany Star might be a candidate:
http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/Defen ... nyStar.htm
Is says that Naval personnel qualified for services in the North Sea and English Channel. Any sign of that on his Service Papers?
Best wishes,
Brian

Hello Brian,
That's interesting isn't it? And looking at the clasps on it, perhaps he had this clasp on his Atlantic Star.
He does appear to have been in the English Channel for Operation Neptune.
Thanks,
Meg

Hello Meg,
If you’re not getting anywhere there’s a British Medal Forum here
http://www.britishmedalforum.com/index.php
All I can see is a list of names. Maybe I’m doing something wrong or perhaps you have to register to see anything.
All the best,
Alan

Just thought I'd update you on this. I went to the forum recommended by Alan (thanks by the way!) and it proved very helpful.
I wrote to the MOD and so now know it was the France and Germany Clasp which is missing.
Best wishes,
Meg
