Mary WELSH another Brickwall

Post by jen2 » Sun Aug 01, 2010 12:22 pm

Looking for birth of Great Grandmother Mary Welsh born abt 1840 to parents James & Mary Welsh. She married a John Blessington in Bradford England in 1858 aged 18.
The 1871 English states she was born in Ireland. Her parents on the 1871 Census state they were both born Ireland. His Occupation listed as a hawker of pots which would seem to be right as on her Marriage Certificate it states her fathers occupation as Hawker.
Mary and John had 8 children born in England 5 of which died before immigrating to Australia in 1874 where they went on to have another son John. After Johns birth his father died and 10 years after Johns birth his mother went on to have my grandfather Sanders to an unknown person. ](*,) ](*,)
Sanders was 9 years of age when his mother died and he with his brother John were sent to an Industrial School for a period of 5 years as neglected children. 2 of their 3 sisters appeared before the courts on numerous occasions and both ended up in Mental Asylums.

I would appreciate any help with my family.

Hi Jenny
You may need a huge amount of luck to find anything in Ireland for around the 1840 period, more so if the family were RC. Statutory registration did not begin in Ireland across the board until 1863. There are some Parish registers, many have been microfilmed, and it is worth checking the IGI, and the LDS library online catalogue to see what exists, but not all areas are covered and not all denominations' records have survived, if indeed they were kept. Some records appear to exist which it seems have not been filmed or otherwise copied or recorded and may still be in the care of local churches.

You would really need to know where in Ireland too - it is sometimes possible to find this out from one of the census returns if you are lucky enough, but mostly they will just state "Ireland", or from an application for poor relief or similar (industrial school records?? I don't know....)

Best wishes

Lesley,

Thank you for the reply. I did not think it would be easy from what I have read about Ireland records but I will look again in IGI and LDS to see if anything pops up.

I'm afraid I don't know much about English birth records (although I really should by now  ) but I noticed one of Michael and Bridget's chidren, Ellen, was born at Liverpool.
Do English birth records show where the parent's were married?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette
Do English birth records show where the parent's were married?
None of the older ones I've seen have mentioned marriage details, so I don't think so.

Best wishes

I have an Australian birth Certificate for her son John born in Australia in 1874 and it states Mary formerly Welsh was born Co. Mayo Ireland aged 37
fathers name John Blessington 39 years born Ireland (I believe Leitrim) and he was present when child was born
