Where did Maggie go ?.....

Post by Ted » Fri Aug 26, 2005 3:19 pm

Hi everyone - just registered with TS - looks like a great forum - everyone seems very friendly & willing to help. Like all of you I've been 'haunted' by genealogy for a while now - but no claims to expertise.

My major brick wall just now is:- Maggie Allan Bn 1882/84 - shown aged 7, on 1891 Census with parents Robert & Elsie Allan at 7 Ann St, Woodside, Aberdeen City. Sisters Jane(9), Mary(2),brothers Robert(6), Alexander(4) and John(1mth). I have B Certs for all other than Maggie. Robert & Elsie married 4/6/1880 in Huntly - I have M Cert. On the census Maggie is marked as born in Huntly. Jane born there Nov 1881 and Robert in Aberdeen in May 1885. So Maggie should be in between Aug 1882 - Sept 1884.

No trace of her birth as Maggie or Margaret at Huntly those dates on SP. I checked all female births in Huntly those dates - nae luck. Then paid a fortune to check every Maggie & Margaret in Aberdeenshire those dates - again brick wall. Then searched every Maggie & Margaret in Scotland those dates - same result. She is not with the rest of the family on 1901 census - nor anywhere else that I can find - no trace of her death or marriage as far as you can search on SP. Have to conclude that she was not registered as Maggie or Margaret on B Cert. Tried permutations of her 2 grans names Jane / Eslpeth - brick wall. No trace on LDS site. By now I must own substantial sections of GRO building.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions

Hi Ted,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

I had a quick look at ScotlandsPeople and there is a MARGARET ALLEN born in 1883 in Huntly. Is this her with the alternative spelling of surname? I started my search as Ma* Al*n in Huntly. Then gradually filled in the blanks, keeping the search result at 1 quantity.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew

Oh boy do I feel stupid - never used the wild card - just got the cert for the one you suggested - jackpot - however now makes my life worse - new middle names never previously encountered & new address - more research pending.

Well worth my while registering - can't thank you enough.

Do you think SP would excuse my crass stupidity & give me a refund ???

Hi Ted,

SP must make a fortune out of people making mistakes in their searches. All we can do is learn by experience and try and make our searches as efficient as we can.

All the best,
