Anyone feeling sharp-eyed today? I seem to have lost about 5 children in 1891 and can't find them anywhere
Luke Johnson and Eliza Harner/Harmer/Hamer had at least 12 children in Southwark, Surrey (Greater London) from 1878-1898. Here are the dates of their baptisms, that correspond pretty well to birth years:
Eliza 1878
Charlotte 1880
Luke 1882
James 1884
Martha 1884
William 1886
Robert 1888
Elizabeth 1890
Edward 1893
George 1894
Matthew 1896
Samuel 1898
In the 1881 census Luke and Eliza with daughters Eliza and Charlotte are living with Luke's parents, Luke Sr and Charlotte (Hinton) Johnson at 282 Tabard St in Newington, London.
In 1891 Luke and Eliza are still with Luke's parents at 288 Tabard St, Newington, but NONE OF THEIR CHILDREN ARE WITH THEM.
By 1901, although Luke's parents are still living, Luke and Eliza are in their own place finally, at 43 Etham St, Bermondsey, with children Eliza, Luke, William, Robert, Elizabeth, Edward, George, Matthew and Samuel.
I think James and Martha were twins and both died young, and Charlotte also died, but Eliza, Luke, William, Robert and Elizabeth should show up somewhere in 1891, as they are obviously still living in 1901. Where were they?
Not with the paternal grandparents, anyway, as I've found them.
Eliza's parentage is something of a mystery, so I won't swear they aren't with Eliza's mother somewhere, but if so they are hiding under some other name. Eliza's father was, according to her marriage record, named John and he was already deceased by the time of her marriage.
But surely all those little Johnsons must be somewhere about!? Where would you send your children, aged 0-13 in April? Census night was 5 April that year.
Can anyone see them?
Thanks for looking,
Sarah
