Difficulty finding a OPR

Post by billymac » Tue Jan 27, 2026 1:17 am

Well I'm back again looking for advice. I am wanting to get an OPR record but for the life of me cannot find it. I have found it of FamilySearch but cannot bring it upon Scotlands People. There are a number of brothers and sisters in their records but I cannot find any of them on SP. I imagine this is because of my search criteria. I have attached one of the FS records so I'd be appreciative of advice on how to find the same SP record.
Regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I don't know why your search didn't give you the expected result. I used the following criteria on ScotlandsPeople and got two results, one being your one in Longforgan.

You searched for - Church type: Old Parish Registers - Births, Surname: "mcgriggor", Surname options: "Wildcards allowed", Forename: "jean", Forename options: "Names that begin with", Year range: "from 1777 to 1777", County/city: "ALL"

The following search finds three of the family group: You searched for - Church type: Old Parish Registers - Births, Surname: "mcgriggor", Surname options: "Wildcards allowed", 1st Parent Name: "mcgriggor", 1st Parent Name options: "Exact names only", 2nd Parent Name: "isles", 2nd Parent Name options: "Exact names only", County/city: "ALL"

That gives Elizabeth (1775), Jean (1777) and Elspet (1779), all in Longforgan.

The following search gives 10 children, all baptised in Longforgan between 1765 and 1786, including one pair of twins.

You searched for - Church type: Old Parish Registers - Births, Surname: "m*gr*g*r", Surname options: "Wildcards allowed", 1st Parent Name: "m*gr*g*r", 1st Parent Name options: "Wildcards allowed", 2nd Parent Name: "isles", 2nd Parent Name options: "Wildcards allowed", County/city: "ALL"

All the best,

AndrewP

Ah. Thank you again Andrew. The name is variously 'McGrigor" and "McGriggor". I was using the majority spelling (one g) and imagined the wildcard would capture both ---- I see now it doesn't. McGri*gor does.
Thank you for the valuable lesson.
