Death in 1876 - but where is the pub?.....

Post by LesleyB » Sat Nov 05, 2005 1:18 am

Hi all
I've uploaded the death entry for Grace Turner, m.s. Lyon. I'm having difficulties with the name of the Inn - any ideas?

It looks to me like "Ferenese" but that's troppo Italiano for Renfrewshire, e vero? 8)

Any suggestions as to where the heck it is/was would be very gratefully received!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

My suggestion is Terenge Inn. The first letter remains my biggest doubt - F, P, T, or even J?

All the best,

Fereneze Inn, Barrhead

Post by Jack » Sat Nov 05, 2005 9:34 am

Hi Lesley & Andrew,

It'll most likely be the Fereneze Inn, Carlibar Rd, Barrhead;
but i've had the advantage of knowing of a Fereneze Drive in Glenburn, Paisley.
Unfortuately the 1881 doesn't actually give the name of the inn, but very nearby was a Fereneze Terrace.
Maybe Dunterlie Rd was re-named Carlibar Rd at some point?

Thanks Annette!

Maybe the Terrace gave name to the inn? Later; more probably it was vice versa! Jack

Hi All,

If you visit one of Andrew's favourite sites www.old-maps.co.uk and search for co-ordinate 250369,659259 and zoom in you will see all the above names. There is an inn which could very possibly be Fereneze Inn.

Added later.
Sorry Jack I've just realised from your post that the Inn still exists. The co-ordinate above agrees with the modern day postcode G78 1AD.

Defintutely "...ereneze", and if you look at the relationship of the informant on the bottom of the 3 records you will see an "F" .........

Wow!
Thanks everyone!
So there is a little bit of Italy in Renfrewshire after all!?
Seriously, I wonder what the origin of the name is?

Stupidly, although I had the 1881 entry, I didn't think to look either side at the neighbours or I would have seen Fereneze Terr. Thanks Annette, Andrew and Jack & David for all your help. And thank you for the '51 Annette. I did have a note of this from a distant cousin - the Andrew Lyon mentioned is Grace/Grizael's brother who seems to be visiting.

I see from the old maps site that there was also a Fereneze Cottage and a Fereneze Print Works and a quick google reveals there is now a Fereneze Golf Club!

Best wishes
Lesley

Not necessarily, - there is the famous commentary by an English football commentator back in the late 70's/80's when he chose to pronounce the home of Dundee United, as if it were Italian !!, - Tannadice - Tannadichee

I'm 90%+ plus sure that there will be a Scottish derivation, and Groome's 1890s Gazetteer comes to my rescue with the entry "Fereneze or Ferneze, a range of hills on the mutual border of Abbey and Neilston parishes, Renfrewshire, culminating, 1.5 mile W by S of Barrhead, at 725 feet above sea level"

The "z" is probably a 'yogh', an archaic letter which looks like a 'Z' with a flourish beneath it, - see http://www.scottishhandwriting.com/cont ... age=s4_6_6
