Catholic births/baptisms prior to 1855.....

Post by nolanpa1 » Mon Nov 07, 2005 3:41 pm

I have heard that if an ancestor was a catholic and not a member of the Church of Scotland that they will not appear on the register prior to 1855, does anyone know of somewhere these other births/baptisms appear?

Thanks
Pamela

Hi Pamela
As far as I'm aware photocopies of some Roman Catholic Church records are held at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh in RH21 arranged by diocese. Apparently there are very few RC records for the 18th Century and the registers do not really start till the 19th century. The Parishes concerned may also have a copy & apparently the Archdiocese of Glasgow holds most of the originals. I don't think any are available on-line, but I don't really know - I have no direct experience, just going on what I've read.

Hope this is of some help
best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Lesley,

Does anyone know if those for Glasgow parishes are held at the Mitchell Library collection?

Cheers

A few 18th Century Catholic records are available but mostly for Banff and Aberdeenshire from about 1709. Later, around 1780, records are available for Kirkcubright. Indeed the very earliest Baptisms you'll find on Scotland people are (just) pre reformation Catholic in 1553. Though there may be others not yet accounted for in the Vatican archives and those of the Scots Colleges of Paris, Douai, Madrid and Rome.

For Glasgow you won't find any post reformation ones, that I know of, prior to 1808 (same date for Greenock).

The marriage records, from 1808 to about 1834 also contain the birth place of both parties.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Catholic births/baptisms prior

Does anyone know the ages of St Saviour's chapel in Govan or Our Lady and St Margaret's in Kinning Park?

I thought my ancester may have been baptized in St.Anthony's in Govan but then a respondant to one of my other posts has informed me that St.Anthony's wasn't built until 1863 and that's too late for my gg grandmother as she ws born circa 1847.

Does anyone know where I can find out which chapels existed in the area at this time? (I don't live in the UK)

Thanks
Pamela

Catholic births/baptisms prior to 1855

I just spoke to a nice lady at the Archdiocese of Glasgow offices and she told me that all of the pre-1855 records for Glasgow were sent to Edinburgh to be digitized, they should return to Glasgow in about 1 month. According to her once all of the records for Scotland RC churches have been digitized then they will all be uploaded to the Scotland's People website!!

Great news!!

Ah well!!, - let's not get too excited just yet. I'm sure that it's the intention to add these records to SP in the future, but let's ca canny on the timescale. After digitisation I'd guess that there will need to be an indexing stage, assuming that indexes don't already exist, and it may be that such a stage will be combined with the indexing of the various kirk session material currently being indexed by NAS/SCAN/GSU.

Up to date the only NAS records to be found on SP are the testamentary records, and thse data files were fully tested out on the web over a period of a couple of years before being combined with the GROS data. In other words it's something else again for SoL to be involved with NAS in terms of developing new data sources for SP...........

I managed to find a marriage record in Crichton OPR for a catholic marriage in 1850 - a very rare find indeed I was told.......however there is not much info about the bride and groom other than their names and I wondered if the full record would give more detail but how do I go about this?? thank u :)
Researching these names (and more)..
Gibb (Ayr/Lanark/Edinburgh)
Sommerville (Lanarkshire)
Young (Lothian & Borders/Fife)
Crease (Edinburgh)

I personally haven't had any luck finding Catholic ancestors in the OPR but you can get lucky. I have friends who have found quite a wealth of info on some Catholic ancestors from them. Lanarkshire researcher, Des Garrity also assured me not to overlook the OPRs as he'd got quite a few records that way.
