I am boasting but!!!

Now this is nothing to do with Family History or Scotland but I just felt like crying this morning when I discovered that my 12 year old charge Ian has been nominated for the National Academy for Gifted & Talented Youth! I'm sure some of you must have heard my screams.
This means that Academically he is in the top 5-10% in the Country.WOW.
What makes it so lovely is that he is so understanding of his peers who are not so bright & sees other things in them
"So& So is really good at Rugby or at being friends with everybody"
He works steadilly too but has lots of time for fun eg sailing,tennis,Scouts,Scaletrix & reading.He even cleans his room! Will clean the loo for a pound!
Big brother is on a school trip to WW1 Battlefields at moment so he can have his moment of glory without raining on big brother's parade.

Thats brilliant Joette!!

He sounds a very balanced young man. We often don't give our young people the credit they deserve but he sounds as though he is happy with giving pleasure to others. Long may that continue.

It also sounds as though he has the self-control a lot of his peers lack

Tell him that although I may not know him I'm delighted for him.

Joette no wonder you felt like crying! That is such good news, and lovely to hear he is such a nice lad into the bargain. Not many weans (or big weans for that matter) are tolerant of others' failings, no matter how bright or otherwise they are themselves. And a cleaner into the bargain! WOW - how did you do that then - tell him I'll double his salary if he'll come and do mine

A big well done to Ian from me. It's so nice to hear good things about young people. Ian sounds like a great kid. I wish him all the best.

(can you tell me how you got him to clean his room?. So I can try it on Merlot Jnr).

I bribe him! Works a treat every time! No I promise a treat at the end e.g.
an hour's Scaletrix.He knows I am rubbish & he can beat me hands down!
BB is not so keen but him I work on his consience e.g."OH if I wasn't so busy I would give this room a good going over"
I started them off right from the begining-they have always put away their own toys,helped with cooking/shopping.I think it helps that they see their Dad/Grandpa's doing the same.Andrew(14) is a very keen chef & he
cooks from his head & seems instictive about what goes together.Not so good at cleaning up though! Ian cooks straight from the recipe but does what I do & clears up as he goes along & even wipes the cooker after use!
They both help me run my Beaver Scout Colony & are both involved in Scouts which I think coupled with good parenting gives them a good grounding in self-confidence,caring for & working with others.
Now they are not perfect & we have our moments but I think our young people today are on the whole a good bunch.
