HI Katie what you actually got from GROS was a copy of the Old Parish Register.Stat.Reg didn't come into effect until 1855 in Scotland.
What do you know about Thomas? What children, where & when born?
I know it is a twenty year plus gap but have a look at the 1841 Ratho Census or if you know where/when any children born look at that Parish -if different in the 1841.
Maybe he made it to 1855 for his Death in which case his parents names(if Known) will be on that. You may be lucky & get a 1855 Death with all it's extra info.
Sometimes it is a matter of luck & good spacing between events which enable us to make the connections.
Hope that they made it until 1841 for the Census & that should give a place of Birth unless it's the dreaded "Outside Census County" when at least you know they weren't born there!
Have you had a look at the IGI for parents?Sometimes it can give you the clue you are looking for.
Good luck.

Hi Katie
In the Fife Death Index I found the following:
A quick search in the wills and testaments section on SP reveals that the 5 page document can be downloaded on Scotlands People:
Cockburn Thomas 14/03/1853 Forester residing at Paratis, Parish of Largo Cupar Sheriff Court SC20/50/24
Hope this is of some help. And the good news is he should be in the 1851 somewhere!
Best wishes
Lesley
