Post by neleh_22 » Fri Feb 17, 2006 8:01 pm

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows where I would get a map of St Kentigerns Cemetery.

Thanks Helen

Hi Helen
Do you mean this St Kentigerns? http://www.wallaceinlanark.com/st__kentigerns.htm
There seems to be several in Scotland including a St Kentigerns Cemetery in Dumfriesshire.

...and there is one in Manchester!
Best wishes

Hi Helen
Unfortunately the map on the page is the size it is and cannot be made larger. However, it must have come from somewhere! I'm sure someone will come along with a better idea, but what about contacting the owner of the web site and asking where the map came from?

I wonder if any monumental inscriptions for this church have been collected? If so, there would probably have been a map of the layout made at the time. The Mitchell Library in Glasgow may be able to help with this or Glasgow and West of Scotland FHS may have some published MIs.

Just found this on the Mitchell web site here
Lanark St Kentigern's Churchyard, Monumental Inscriptions in the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire 1977 Scott, Sheila A
- I bet there's a map in that publication!

Best wishes
Lesley

Is there more than one St Kentigern's Cemetery in Glasgow?

My granny was buried at St Kentigern's in 1983 and my mum told me recently that when she visited the site after arranging a headstone some years before was dismayed to find there was no marker on the grave, and it never looked like one had been there. She also said the whole place was a shambles and not cared for at all.

I would like to try to follow up this headstone issue, as mum DID pay for it and expected it to be there. Is there a contact address or email even? (Which would be better since we are in Australia)

Hi Ninatoo
I'm not sure if there are, but it certianly looks like there may be two in Lanarkshire, one in Lanark & one in Glasgow.

At Rootsweb: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LA ... 1019906411
Although the Town of Lanark's main cemetery maybe indeed called St Kentigerns. Glasgow also has a cemetery called St Kentigerns. It is the Catholic cemetery right next door to the Glasgow's Western Necropolis Which is actually in the north of Glasgow. Generally accessed thru Maryhill.
The principal cemetery in the town of Lanark is
> called St Kentigern's, whereas the Necropolis beside the Cathedral is in
> Glasgow, some 20 miles to the north west.
Try for contact details:

Hi ninatoo,

St Kentigern,s in Balmore Road Glasgow was vandalised back in the 80s most of the Headstones. Including my familes were smashed and then dumped by the council because they could not put them back on the graves. So maybe that is what happened to yours when your mother visited may have been around that time.
The next Lorry along I'll have a hudggy

Thanks for the replies lesleyb and hudggy. I will let my mum know and maybe she will need to organise another headstone to be placed there, as it naturally meant a lot to her.

Why could they not put the headstones back (assuming some were not completely destroyed)? Surely they must have had lair numbers? Well I hope they do, since Mum will need it to get a new headstone in place!

What a great pity for all the families with relatives buried there. I have read that there was a lot of vandalism in the Glasgow cemeteries. A great pity that the youth can think of nothing better to do with their time.

Hi.
I have a relative who was interred there on Feb. 8, 1950 following a High Mass at Church of the Immaculate Conception, Maryhill. I'm hoping that there is a headstone & that maybe a pic is available. Her name was Elizabeth Judge and she was a teacher, only 60 when she died so maybe a local school would have a class photo? Her usual address was 6 Dungoyne St., Glasgow. So I'm thinking it may be a catholic school in the area?

BTW. Hope you had a very Merry Xmas and am wishing all a prosperous New Year :)

regards. dennis
