looking for any info,leads. mungo married a Mary McSween 1834. Know that they had at least 1 son John (my gg-grnfthr) he married Susan Nivins, Edinburgh 1861. They had a large family! John,James,Joseph,Mungo,Charles,Mary,Catherine,Agnes,Harriet,Susan,William,Helen.

Hello Niall

I found Mungo marrying Mary McSwene on 28 December 1834 on the IGI Batch No M119674. It only states Glasgow, Lanark.
If you use the County search on IGI click on the Batch number and it will bring up a list of all marriages around that time in the parish.

The Campbells appeared to have invaded Glasgow at that time. there are large numbers of them which makes locating a particular individual quite difficult. I tried to locate the children by parish and had no luck.
Have you tried the Old Parochial records on scotlandspeople or searched them on microfilm at an LDS Centre. Since it is before Statutory Registration the old records are your most likely source.

Have you looked for the deaths of Mungo and Mary McSween/McSwene on the Scotlands People site? If they died after 1855 their death entry should give you the names of their parents. Best maybe to start with the marriage entry for John Campbell in 1861 which should indicate if his parents are still alive at that time.

Also a search in the 1851 census would be useful. A quick search in Lanark reveals only 1 Mungo Campbell (aged 56) in Lanark in 1851 so it would be worth checking, but I'm assuming your Mungo was still alive at that time.

thanks for your replies on this. Yes, I have the info on John but am very grateful to you finding this. As to Mungo, he died in 1855, just in time for statutory records. He died aged approx 41 at Barnhill Poorhouse, a "pauper tailor", recorded as being there for two months. As to Mary McSween and any other info, nothing. I have a copy of Mungo's marriage cert but this reveals very little, cannot find him or Mary on 1851 census(online), think I have found John in Edinburgh aged 18, so am waiting for 1841 census. Have looked on LDS website and tentively believe I have found Mungo's birth but cannot be sure. Thanks once again

Have you been able to get access to the Poorhouse records at the Mitchel Library, Glasgow? They might well tell you a bit more about Mary McSween. There might even be a poor house register entry for her.

This is one of the short early applications that unfortunately gives very little family details.
Proof of residence was the priority.
According to addresses & dates Mungo should be in the High Street area of Glasgow in 1851,
but for some reason i can't see him (nor in Glasgow 1841).

works in Slateyard in Pitt Street and lodges with his employer.
Applicant is a tailor to trade - been off work 3 weeks.
His residences have been as follows.

Prior Bells Wynd - Glasgow 1yr
Prior High Street - Glasgow 2yrs

It has also presented new ones but the fact that he was born in Barony does match a record of a Mungo born 1812 on the LDS records. Many thyanks!

Hi Niall,

Can't help you much with Mungo (same problems you have had by the sound of it!) but John Campbell and Susan Nivens were my great x3 grand parents. Their daughter Susan was my great x2 grandmother. Which line are you decended from?
