Hi momat,

I can't make out the lettering very clearly as I'm not on my usual computer and can't seem to zoom in on your image. What I can make out looks to me like Jean McLean ms Mc?esham. On the family search site there is a submitted entry (so it isn't guaranteed to be accurate) for the birth of a Mary McLean in Old Kilpatrick, c.1847 with parents John McLean and Jane McIlquham. Could this be a possibility?

Good luck,
Cat

Hi Mo

I go for McIlwham simply because I used to know a couple of folk by that name.
It looks like the last leg of the 'm' runs into the division between the boxes.

Thanks all,

I had actually found out what it is through some deep searching
but thought I woud ask the experts just to be sure.

Jean McIlwham

Russell was spot on.
Russel ,maybe the folk you know are related to this one.

On the IGI it is stated as McIlquam and I was going no where with that one.

Cheers
Maureen

Hi Mo,

There are a few words in Old Scots where "qu" (or "quh") and "wh" are interchangeable, so I would keep an open mind on McIlquam or even McIlquham if you find that on other documents.

All the best,

Mary's marriage cert names the mother Jane McIlquham.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Like Russell I would go with McIlwham. I put the certificate into Photoshop, enlarged it and increased the contrast, which made it easier to read. I also knew a family of this name.
