It's a long time since you posted and I wonder if you're still following this thread. Anyway, here goes. I have a John Boyd who married Catherine McGibbon (from Stirling) in Edinburgh 5 Nov 1792. John was a stonemason so he probably travelled around a lot. John and Catherine had 10 children and whilst most of them were baptised in Stirling, some of the early ones were baptised in both Stirling and Carstairs. We have puzzled over this Carstairs connection and it occurs to me that our John Boyd could be your John Boyd born 19 May 1771 West Lothian, Scotland. This, coupled with some common middle names (Fullerton, Crow) could explain our Carstairs connection.
