Pringle Clerk/Clark .....

Post by Pandabean » Wed May 24, 2006 3:33 pm

Hi,

I am wondering what are the origins of the name Pringle? Is it a common first name or is there a mistake somewhere.

Hi Pandabean
It looks like Pringle is his middle name - so could be a surname from further back in the family somwhere e.g. his mother's maiden name, his granny's maiden name etc....

Ancestry's name dictionary at
http://www.searchforancestors.com/surna ... ringle.php
gives:
Pringle
Scottish and English (Northumbria): habitational name from a place near Stow Roxburghshire, formerly called Hop(p)ringle, from Middle English hop ‘enclosed valley’ + a name of Old Norse origin composed of the byname Prjónn ‘pin’, ‘peg’ + an unidentified second element.
and there is more info here:

Best wishes
Lesley

Nope I dont think it is a middle name. I had a look at their sons death certificate and it seems that the mother was Pringle Clark. So it must be a forename. I also found a birth relating to her in the 1750's

Hi Pandabean
Maybe I'm having a dense moment but usually the OPR births are given in the following format:
13/09/1829 LYON ALLAN ANDREW LYON/MARY PARKER FR98 M LOUDOUN 603/00 003*

So, Allan Lyon was born to Andrew Lyon and Mary Parker.

Yours seems to be a couple of names short which is what threw me. The slash between PRINGLE /CLERK suggests these are two people - which doesn't fit with what you say his mother's name is given as. If it is a first name it is very unusual. The best thing to do would be to have a look at the OPR yourself and verify that is what it says.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi folks

The entry that Pandabean lists is a Marriage and not a birth. It is truly indexed under forename Pringle surname Clerk and her spouse was Peter Johnston.

Best wishes

Hi

The IGI extracted mariage record has Peter Johnston marrying a lady called Pringle Clerk on 24 May 1778.

Regards

Catriona

Clearly I was having a dense moment - completely confused by the slash being in the wrong place. Doesn't take much to throw me!

best wishes

A quick search of the IGI throws up 251 records of PRINGLE as a Christian name.

An equal mix of male and female and, not surprisingly, the majority from the Borders areas.
