Hello David

During the last User Group meeting the release of the OPR's was discussed. The most definite and recent date that has been indicated is "by the end of 2006" which is just as stated on the SP website. We can be assured the work is in progress and that is all. I would say it's always safe to assume it will be closer to the end of the next six month period than the beginning.

Best wishes
Jean

In fact it may just be 1 or 2 counties by the end of 2006, with the rest being rolled out during 2007, - Jean ws at the end of a telephone line in the USofA .........

Any news. I notice the GROS site is still saying 2006 for OPR's. Looks like the census debacle again.

David,

As you seem to be the most informed person to ask I have a query that has always bugged me and you may have some insight. Are the updates for SP a full time job for the people, or person, preparing them? I ask as I have no knoweldge on the matter and they do seem to take forever. Was just wondering whether it was labour or bureaucracy that held these things back.

Cheers

Hi Rab

I'm a wee bit unclear just what is the question that you are posing.

Please clarify.

Hi David

I think the question was whether it was a matter of cost or politics !

Neither being the answer.

Its more of a technical difficulty.
The OPR consists of multiple entries on pages of varying sizes and with equally variable amounts of content. Designing a software package that can take into account all the variables is complex and fraught with difficulties.
Transcription of entries would have been the obvious answer but then the veracity of each entry could be called into question. "But is that what it actually said ?"
The purists like myself want/need to see the actual entry but how do you locate it especially when it is in a modified Secretary Hand, or is squeezed between two other entries and there are no lines on the page to locate your entry
A nightmare.
Hope this answers your question about the delay.
It would be easy to employ and train a team to transcribe but it wouldn't please many of us.

Russell is part of the way there.

The images were complete some time ago, but it was only then realised that the proposed method of linking the index entries to the images wasn't going to be practical, so GROS took a deep breath and decided to re-index the OPR. It's the latter that has taken the time.

As Russell pointed out that was my question. It just seems to me that SP updates in general seem to take a long time. That's why I was wondering whether it was labour or bureaucracy that was slowing things down.

I sort of understand now what is slowing down the OPR images in particular. Maybe I'm missing something here as I still can't get my head around it. SP has an existing index for OPRs live on the site. From that we can send for a copy of an entry. What I can't understand is why the digital images can't be acquired the same way. I'm going on the basis that each page of entries has a unique index number, maybe that is not the case.
