Shock when you thought you knew everything.

Post by joette » Wed Jul 19, 2006 3:41 pm

I had did little searching on the more recent history of my Torrance line.
Decided to have a look at my GGranny's sister's marriage /children but found it was to recent for the Births I wanted to find how many set of twins she had had & how many survived.Decided to find out who was still at home in the 1901 & found more children than I was expecting & many more than my Mother had known of!Worked out they had ten(?) children between 1873 & 1893.
I had often wondered how she had not been a more supportive Grandmother to her daughter Elizabeth who had a strained relationship with her Husband & ill-health.The reason was she had Bright's Disease & died the year before my Granny Peggy was born. She was one of the younger children.
Now as many of you know my brother suffers from Renal Failure & we have always wondered where it appeared from.It contributed to my Granny's death but we thought that it was caused by her Hypertension but maybe it was vice-versa.Her brother also had it as a contributing factor in his death but again thought it was due to the paralysis caused by his WW1 wounds when he was shot in the back by Irish Rebels.
Then thought "I've never looked for James Torrance's death-don't really need it I know all about him from 1851 Census onwards"
Well after lots of searching I found him dead in Paisley-he had lived in Govan(mainly) from 1861-1901.He died of Phithis in Hawkhead Ayslum in 1907.The shock however was the fact that he had a 2nd wife that we had no idea of! He married 21 months after Catherine died to Mary Robb or Moore a widow.I guess when you have that many children to look after life is short.
He has given the wrong name for his Mother on his Marriage-Elizabeth Bryden-she was Margaret Barnes/Barron.She died when he was a toddler so I guess he could have got it wrong although he managed to get it right when he married the first time around.
The moral is just because these people were around in the living memory of others there are still surprises to be found. :o :o :o

Torrance Connections?

Post by jacktorran » Tue Sep 05, 2006 3:17 pm

I'm a direct descedent of Thomas Torrance aka. Andrew Torrance b 1735 Larkhall d 1805. Had sons: Thomas, John, Benjamin, James and William. THey all came to Canada in early 1800's. William married a Isabella Gibb and had her brother working for him.
Are there any connections?
The brothers were successful merchants in Canada. What would have caused them to leave?
Will share information

Your mention of " Bright's Disease " alerts me to say this is also on the death cert. for my natural grandmother ( Helen Wilson Lyon nee Kelly ) who died in 1919 when my father was just 20 months old. So neither he nor I knew ever her. There are just one or two photographs pf her handed down to me.

Whilst I have tracked her Kelly family history back to the late 1700's in Foveran, Aberdeenshire, and in the last year or two have even caught up with other living descendants from these early Kelly's ( Kelly of Cults ).

Can anyone cast any light on the Bright's Disease that took this beautiful lady away when she was only 29 ?

Brights Disease is another term for chronic nephritis - or kidney disease. A good website for these terms is www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm
