Visiting Scotland .....

Hello all, I hope this is the correct place to post this message. As a lot of you know I did post a while back concerning these names in my ancestry. I am still no further on being unable to find a marriage between James Donaldson and Janet Marshall. The reason I am posting now is I am going to be coming to Scotland in September, and staying overnight on my way to visit the Isle of Skye and would have liked to try and find out more, but I don't know were to start, or where I should visit. I was going to go to Bathgate where the children were born, but I'm not sure if that would help. I have tried to find out where James was born, I think he was probably born around 1785, I have found a few births for a James Donaldson but I can't tell which is the right one, is Edinburgh a good place to look things up, or does it depend where they were born, any tips would be greatly appreciated. Sorry Liz just seen your reply, I was going to stay overnight in Edinburgh to be honest I dont really know if this is the best place. I am only going on the fact that all the children were born in Bathgate, so thought this was the best place to go, do you think I am right.

I've been doing a wee bit of searching and if these are the children of the marriage, then I think James must have been born say between 1763 and 1775, which is earlier than you might have been searching! Hope this might be of some help.

I don't see any Janet Marshall among them, but could Janet Matheson be a possibility??

I don't know what you'd be able to find out actually visiting Bathgate without checking out what was available first, but you would most certainly get a good idea of the town and the surrounding areas. Hope you've got some time for planning before you leave!
