A question re number of children.....

Post by ladybird » Sat Sep 16, 2006 10:30 pm

Hi folks

I have these from SP. all my family.
I notice at the end of each it gives "child 2, child 3 (twice), child 4.
Does this denote the number of children still alive to this family as there were others born in between which don't seem to be listed.

If so which would be the best one to send for....would the record name those numbered children?

Can't dig out the BC's - wrong puter - but I'm almost positive two of my rellies who were twins were shown as child 1 and child 2.

 Yours have child 3's and a child 4

There were 6 children. What happened to George 1823 and David's 1825 entries? :?
I know for a fact that David survived...he's my 2nd g/grandfather

Thanks Maureen, the IGI has been very useful.
What I'm wondering is why neither George nor David's births are listed on SP even though both survived, married and had children?
It seems strange that 4 children are registered and 2 aren't.

Hi Sylvia

You wondered about non-recording of births for some children.
It wouldn't surprise me if they were a mining family since they are in a parish which was predominantly mining at that time. (We tend to think of it as a part of Glasgow now but it certainly wasn't back then!)

Mining was a dangerous, poorly paid occupation and the industry went through frequent slumps in activity. If there was no work there was no money coming in and we have noticed similar gaps in registration of births in our families. They also seemed to move from one mining village to another quite frequently although usually in the same general area.
I think registering a birth was probably the last thing on their minds if there was no bread to put on the table.

I have a lot of children who were never registered before it was compulsory. I understand from my reading that it was costly to have a child baptised and therefore some children 'missed out' if money was tight. I believe it is also the reason why you will find a few baptisms on the same day, even though the children were born in different years...apparently you paid for the minister's services, not the individual baptisms, so it was cheaper to have a mass baptism sometimes.

Yes my mining ancestors in Muirkirk had what I thought was sextuplets all having the same birth date on the IGI.It was off course a mass christening.Six for the price of one.

Perhaps the missing records are due to a transcription error?
