expert genealogy

Hi
I just had contact from a lady through the genes reunited site. I am rather bemused by her questions and answers. She thought we had the same John Hardie, certainly we had the same date of birth in 1810 in Polmont. My record comes from the Opr,s I have his brother's death cert etc which gave me the parents etc. This lady says that she got her info from "expert genealogy".....I have never heard of it! Does anyone know anything about it? She says that John died in 1847 and appears to have lots of info. She doesnt appear to have found a grave or anything........how trustworthy do you think this info would be? Am I just being too skeptical?
Any advice greatly appriciated

Hi Lainey:

There is/was a newsletter published titled 'The Expert Genealogist' by Jeannette Holland Austin, who I was able to verify on the Library of Congress catalogue. She published many books on genealogy in Georgia and the southern U.S. from 1984 - 2001. Her site is http://www.genealogy-books.com

The one you are more likely to be looking for is: http://www.eXpertgenealogy.com

It uses Rootsweb Metasearcher. I entered John Hardie 1810 Scotland into the boxes and it came up with 19 IGI records.

It's another reincarnation of LDS products, :( focussing this time, on linking people to genealogists who can assist in appropriate geographic locations.

This is not an endorsement, nor an evaluation; only a discription in as subdued and politically correct terminology as I can offer.

Hi Frances
Thank you very much for the reply.........it has cleared up this mystery nicely thankyou. I think I shall treat this new information with a pinch of salt then! I had a few doubts to begin with as the person in question had never heard of either IGI or OPRs....
Many thanks

Lainey

Perhaps the person who got in touch meant that she had someone look for the information on her behalf, in that case she wouldn't know what OPR's were.

I would ask for a bit more confirmation as to how she got the info as it might be you've actually got a connection.

Hi Annie
When I asked the lady where the info had come from, she just said hers was right as it had come from "expert genealogy
The main problem straight away, was that she said, John Hardies brother Henry [who was my 3rd gr grandfather] wasnt Johns brother. This really confused me as she had same date and place of birth as I had for John, with the same parents as I had for Henry. Now I've got Henrys death cert and also his will. The thing that made me wonder though, is that I think she had 5 other children matching mine and one that I hadnt heard of. The OPR strangely, doesnt list either Henry or is brother Thomas, but as I have both death certs I wasnt too worried by that. Also the brother Thos signed his mothers death cert, luckily she didnt pass away until 1857. So its kinda left me questioning my own info, but if mine is done from the actual certs and OPRs it will be correct wont it? She also had John listed as a "Captain" with his father James as a "gentleman farmer", where as on Marys death cert, her husband was a canal boatman lol - bit of a difference there! I should say, that Henry was also a canal boatman
This kind of info, just really worries me that I have it all wrong!
Cheers

Lainey,

Meant to say to you, my hubby is a Hardie from the Stirlingshire area. Not really done much on his line yet, keep going round in circles with mine!

I only have Elizabeth Pow born 1820 to James and Mary McEwan in Stirling as yet but then the name is carried on through as a middle name.

Hi Annie
For some reason I didnt get a message that there was a reply, so I apologise for delay! I dont have the names you mention, if you think it would help though I can give you a run down on the info I have for both Pow and Hardie? Pows are v distantly related, Hardies are main line.
