Baillie

Post by Baillie 1799 » Wed Oct 25, 2006 2:46 am

I am very new to Scottish Genealogy. I am having trouble finding information on Alexander Baillie (born 1799) and his brother Daniel Baillie (born 1800). Their parents were William and Margaret. Margaret was born in 1769. William had two brothers, John Baillie and George Baillie. George was born in 1771.

These are all of the dates I know for everyone and all were born and lived in the Highlands. I know, that's a really large area.

They all emmigrated to the US around 1806 except for William who mysteriously stayed behind. maybe died, imprisoned or forced into British Navy. Don't really know.

Any idea where I can go for any information on any of these people with the information I have here?

Many thanks with any help,
David Bailey

Hi David:

Have you searched on ScotlandsPeople at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk?

In the Old Parish Registers section, there is only 1 record for a birth/baptism of Alexander Baillie in 1799, but it only surfaces, if you do not include William or Margaret as parents.

Daniel Baillie, born or baptised in 1800 surfaces, again, without the parents names, or only with Margaret as mother.

In the marriages in the Old Parish Registers, if you enter the surname Baillie [but not the given name William] and enter the spouse's name only as Margaret, you will locate only 1 marriage for the period of 1798-1799.

It may be that your male ancester went by a middle name - for example, he may have been John William, and went by William for one reason or another.

I did a search on IGI and there is a likely candidate for your Alexander, do you know who he married and where?

Alexander Baillie

Do you know anything about the parents such as Margaret's last name?

These are the results for a William Ballie born +-2 of 1769 who married a Margaret.

As for Daniel, there is only one entry in the IGi for a birth around 1800 but he was born in Ayr. But I did find several results for George but only one seems to be born in the Highlands (Inverness). But was botn a year early.

I just looked on the IGI that you mentioned and this is an exact match. Alexander married Margaret Noble in 1824 and both are buried together in Columbiana County, Ohio.
The IGI also says that Alexander Baillie was born in 1799 (no exact date) in Moy and Dalarossie, Inverness. Alexander's parents were William (not positive on father's name) and Margaret (born 1769).
That is the first hole in the wall my family and I have been looking for for a very long time. Thanks you so much for all of your help.

Frances,
The John William Baillie you mentioned as a possible father could be a real possibility. William's brother was also named John. So it is very possible that the name John is repeated during that time. Would defintely be worth looking more into it.

Any suggestions on my next step, how I can get information on that church in Moy Dalarossie?

Thanks again, Dave

Hi Dave:

I was just using John William as an example of being called by the middle name; it wasn't that I had actually located someone by the name of John William. It is not unusual to find family were not actually called by their first name.

If you look at the OPR records regarding this family you may confirm or be able to eliminate them altogether from your search. If it turns out to be the ones you are looking for, then you may find additional info regarding parents names.

As for costs, the ScotlandsPeople provides very good value for your money. For 6 British Pounds or approx. $12 US, you should be able to view and save copies of most of the records I mentioned.

ScotlandsPeople is the Scottish government site, so there is no need to worry about a questionable supplier or use of your credit card online. Once you make the purchase of 30 credits for $12, you will receive an e-mail from the contractor supplying the credit transaction stating the cost to your charge card along with time and date, for your records.

The credits can be used immediately.

All the best for your search.

Frances

P.S. Neither Daniel nor Alexander searched under Moy & Dalrossi nor Inverness get results. Only the 'All Parishes' search provides results, so it may even be that they are not the family you are searching.

Sounds good Frances. I've actually used ScotlandsPeople before but was very limited on what I was looking for. Now that I have an actual name and place to work with. It should really help with my search.

Thanks again for your help, Dave
