Possible help with your research in Ireland .....

Post by Liz Turner » Wed Nov 08, 2006 12:16 am

Update : 22nd March

I've removed all the stuff about the organisation on the day from this post in order to make it easier for folks to read.

ORIGINAL POST

If you’re reading this post, it’s likely that you already have an interest in finding family in Ireland! For myself I’m only just beginning so any and all help is welcome. The Irish records are such a mixture

I was chatting with a colleague at work, late one night last week - as you do. She has spent several years researching her own family history, which includes lots of work in Ireland. I’d been telling her a bit about the TS site, and perhaps foolishly, Christine got carried away with enthusiasm and offered to run a wee seminar for people who might be interested in finding out more about research/resources in Ireland. I was speechless when she made the offer, which anyone who knows me will confirm is unusual  She didn’t believe me when I said we might be inundated with interest …

Our plan would be to run an informal group meeting for anyone on TS who is interested in learning about research in Ireland and the sources available. Christine is not a professional researcher, but has loads of experience of research in her real job (as an academic - for which she is paid!), and she's an entertaining story teller.

I’m aware that lots of people arrange visits to Scotland, sometimes a long time in advance, either to visit local areas of interest or to the record offices in Edinburgh or Glasgow, so to give folks time to arrange visits we thought we’d arrange this for sometime around March/April/May 2007. The date will be dictated by Christine's teaching load and the availability of rooms.

Oh and by the way (as they say in this part of the world), the actual seminar would be free of charge – we might have to pay a small fee each towards the cost of the venue (edit 23/1/07 Cost is £5 to cover cost of room) – but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it!

Cheers!

Liz

Well, I for one would be very interested, Liz :D

As I think I've mentioned before on TS, I discovered that, rather than only one of my grandparents having Irish roots, it turned out that THREE of them are actually from families who originated there

As yet I've only really managed to get back to 1822 with one line in the Belfast area in Antrim. The rest are proving to be a little coy about their whereabouts :? although I'm almost positive one set came from Londonderry and another possibly Tyrone.

I want to plan trips both to Glasgow and Belfast next year, fully armed with notebooks, pencils and my laptop (where allowed :D ).

Getting a heads up on Irish research would be really helpful to me.

Dear Mary

Great to hear from you and glad that this might be of interest. Being honest I know little about my own Irish ancestors. If we get this off the ground, then it really would be aimed a folks just starting out like me!

If at all possible we can try for accommodation where laptops could be used. I thought that by giving a good 4-5 months notice, people might be able to plan. I think the event would almost certainly be held on a Saturday and definitely during the University term-time.

I've got you at the top of the list for possible attendees. Am off to bed now with a great wee book about Irish research - lent to me by my friend ... suspect I'll doze off reading it
