Hi,
I am a newbe to this site, and I hope somebody can point me in
the right direction.
My fathers uncle Charles Petrie was born in Port Tannachy,
Rathven,Banff in 1880.
I have his birth record, but I need to find his baptismal record.
Where would be the best place to look.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Hi Taffygirl
Welcome to Talking Scot.
As far as I know, after 1855 only Birth Certs are available, at least online.
If you know what church he went to, you might try their records. This is an interesting question, as it would be nice to find baptismal records also.
I haven't been much help to you, but I am sure that there are other people with much more knowledge on the subject, on Talking Scot, than I have.
Regards
Sheila

Hi Taffygirl
I can only echo sheila's suggestion to try the church records. Many churches submitted their old documentation to the Church of Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh rather than leave them in damp, unheated churches for years.
If my memory serves me, the parish church was in Enzie which is a neighbouring village.
There was no standard baptismal certificate and not all churches issued one. Most kept a record of baptisms but that was often simply a ledger into which the child's name and date of baptism would be entered. Whether this has survived is a matter of luck.
I wish you luck with your search.

Re Baptism
Hi,
thank you both for the information.
I seem to be going around in circles with this one!!
I telephoned the N/Archives to see if they kept baptismal records, they said the records office had them.
Telephoned records office--they said N/Arcives has them.
I have been given a number for a lady from the Church of Scotland in Banff---have tried telephoning numerous times but can only get an answering machine-----still--i'm not giving up yet.
Thanks again both.
