Riccatoon Cemetry

Post by Margaret » Sun Jan 14, 2007 11:39 pm

Would someone be able to tell me please. is there somewhere I can check where a grave would be located in Riccatoon Cemetry. I am coming to Scotland in July of this year and have just found out that my 3rd great grandparents are burried there. John Millar 25th June 1878 and Jean Lyell 2 Feb 1879 I will be near there so would like to visit thier graves
Thanks for any help
Cheers
Margaret

Hi Margaret,

The burial places in Riccarton, Ayrshire are these two, both under the care of East Ayrshire Council nowadays.

Riccarton Kaimshill Cemetery
Riccarton (Old) Churchyard

Note that spelling was a variable thing. On the ScotlandsPeople website, Jean's death is indexed as Jane Millar or Lyle.

For information regarding the two burial grounds, see the following webpages.
http://www.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/comser/ ... on_Old.asp
http://www.east-ayrshire.gov.uk/comser/ ... carton.asp
Riccarton Churchyard (or Riccarton Old Churchyard) is described as closed. I take that to mean closed to new burials.

For further information, see Q7 and Q8.

Contact e-mail address found on

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Andrew
Many thanks for your help, I will get onto looking at the pages. Yes she was known as Jean and Jane and Millar and Miller :) why didnt they keep it easy for us to find them. Oh well guess that is half the excitement when you find another piece of the big jigsaw
Cheers

Hello Margaret
Kenny Monaghan has lists of names and photos of Ricarton cemetery Headstones and John Miller and Jean Lyles' names are there.
www.monaghan95.freeserve.co.uk
Or put Kilmarnock Headstones and you should be able to find his site he has an E-mail address if anyone wants photos, although I don't know whether he will be able to tell you where they are in the cemetery.
Rita.

Whatever happened to Kenny's site? I can't find it anymore!

Hello Nina,

There’s been nothing put on the Internet Archive for his site since 2007, and presumably that’s when he went off the air.

Here’s the archived site. The text data appears to be intact but photographs often do not survive this process and may not be there. There’s an email address. http://web.archive.org/web/200712091054 ... rve.co.uk/

If you Google for a string of text from the archived site such as “andrew jean campbell wife of john Murdoch” (from the Kilmarnock headstone page) you’ll find no result, meaning that the site doesn’t appear to have been resurrected elsewhere.

There was a query about this site on TS a couple of years ago. It was dead then and emails were bouncing back.

There’s a different email address about halfway down this page but I don’t know if it’s current http://www.ayrshireroots.com/Towns/Kilm ... arnock.htm

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks Alan,

It was just the list of names I was after at this stage, so your reply is very helpful!
