Hi All
I can hardly wait.
Does anyone know if the later dated OPR's have more information than the earlier OPR's, or is it just the luck of the draw?
Which ever way it is, I know that my credit card bill will be a little more this month.

Mostly the luck of the draw. It depended more on the Minister or Session Clerk or whoever was writing in these record books than the era it was written in.sheilajim wrote:Does anyone know if the later dated OPR's have more information than the earlier OPR's, or is it just the luck of the draw?

In general yes, the later the OPR the more chance of a greater amount of information, but, as ADP writes, it's a lottery, based on the practice followed by the minister or session clerk involved.sheilajim wrote:...snipped..........Does anyone know if the later dated OPR's have more information than the earlier OPR's, or is it just the luck of the draw?
......snipped...........
One example, - in the mid/late 1700s and early 1800s it's quite unusual to find a birth/baptism record that doesn't show the name of the wife/mother; whereas in the early 1700s and 1600s this can be quite normal.
Another example, relating to the same general time periods, - the addition later to the bare names of the couple marrying, of his occupation, and their places of residence. Unfortunately relatively few OPRs ever recorded specific family info, - such as the name of the father of the (intended) bride. Anyone ever seen an OPR entry showing the name of the father of the (intended) groom?, - aristocratic marriages apart, and those involving the minister's own family?

Are the City more likely to have more educated Clergy than the highlands and therefore better records?

Ministers were most likely to be from outside the area, and it could easily be the case that a Highlands meenister was from a city.
In addition, much more likely that a Highlands meenister would be better acquaint with his parishioners, and so maybe more likely to record a bit more info, but it's a lottery!!
