OPR disappointment
Hi there,
Just me venting, I recently d/loaded OPR relating to Michail Kellegan and Fanny Renwick ( my g.g. grandparents) maybe i'm just spoiled with the more recent marriage certs, cause on the OPR it gives there names, but doesn't tell me anything else? i was hoping for their parents names or an address of sorts or maybe an occupation.
Am i asking for too much?
p.s. Michail Kellegan is actually Michael Callaghan, but many mis-spellings and long hours searching finally found it with the Kellegan spelling.

Hi Katie
The OPR's that I have, don't give much information either. In one marriage it just gives the names of the bride and groom and nothing else.
In another one they do give the bride's father's name and his occupation, but not the grooms. It seems like a lottery about how much information that you get.
Regards
Sheila

Just as a counterpoint to the previous postings, I have downloaded a few OPRs from Aberdeen for the tree of the friend for whom I'm working at the moment and they have been very informative to the extent of giving father's names and occupations.
Some tend to be scrappy. It's the luck of the draw. Before anyone tells me I know I could probably have viewed them for free at ANEFHS but it's cold here now and the opening hours at King Street don't necessarily suit me.

I sympathise with your disapointment Sandra, but I do feel one pound is very good value for a photocopy of an original document on which an ancestor is named.
However, and I do not know if it is feasible, I think a database of some kind is just crying out to be built.
This just might be the site to do it! Basically every time we download an O.P.R. we submit the Type, Parish, Year, Info contained (i.e. just a yes or no for-) e.g. couples names , occupation, parent/s names, residence, age. Or something similar.
It would be a heck of a job, but can you imagine the benefits to ourselves, and also to S.P. --Sadly I have neither the time nor skills to offer to take on such a mammoth task, but just maybe there is someone out there who could.
My columns have gone skewiff, but hopefully you get the general idea.

It's just a matter of luck - & the clerk - what you get. I have one set from Paisley in 1778 where it is a very cramped list of names & dates and it was quite difficult to find the right entry. Another from 1790 in Kilmacolm where the date booked is in a column on the left, then the note in lovely clear writing saying "Hugh Glover and Janet McGee both cotton spinners in Parkhill in this parish of Kilmalcolm gave in their banns to marriage and were married". The date of the marriage is given in a separate column on the right. OK so it doesn't give their parents names but I had always known Hugh as Paisley weaver so it was a bonus to find that he had previously been a cotton spinner - before that he was a carpenter/sawyer who had spent time in the navy, possibly press-ganged.

hi Muriel, I know it's just a matter of luck with the clerk and you could have a couple of different ones in the same year I suppose. I have a 1795 marriage Banns from Paisley which just says they were of the parish.
My idea was (probably impractical
) that eventually most years in every parish could be covered. It would obviously start very small, with little coverage, but gradually expand . You could search on the parish, then have in table format , the years covered and info supplied, on one or a few pages, in chronological order.
At the moment , I'm only downloading direct line ancestors O.P.R's BUT if I thought perhaps his younger brother, who was married 10 yrs later had more info on his entry (a reputable source telling me so) then it would be well worth my while splashing out. Obviously this type of databse could only be a guideline.
