Poorhouse, Nitshill 1908

Post by Isabel H » Sun Feb 11, 2007 10:07 pm

"Poorhouse, Nitshill" is on a death certificate, but I can't find any references to it. Can anyone tell me, please, if it went by another name?

Can't see one listed for Nitshill in the Poorhouses site, but it might be indexed for the same parish as the DC instead. Where was the death registered?

Hi Isabel,
The Poor House could possibly be the Renfrewshire Combination on Crookston Rd.

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html ... land.shtml

It was less than a mile north of Nitshill.

I believe that Jack has cracked it :!:

As a curious contrast Ross Hall, - the same Rosshall?, - is now the name of and the location of one of the top private hospitals in the West of Scotland.

Curious also in the sense that I'd never have described this location in modern day terms as Nitshill, through which, or past which, I must have driven 100s (1,000s?) of times over the years, but given the various Renfrewshire poorhouse locations it just has to be the same place; and I guess that it's not far off a reasonably central location for the parishes of Carmunnock, Cathcart, Eaglesham, Eastwood, Erskine, Houston, Inchinnan, Kilbarchan, Kilmalcolm, Lochwinnoch, Mearns, Neilston, Renfrew, and Rutherglen !

The death was registered in Barrhead & Leven (Dist. 572/2) so it probably is Renfrewshire Combination. I see it opened in 1906.

Thank you all.

Poorhouse Nitshill

:) Don't know if this helps but,Nitshill/Renfrewshire Combination Poorhouse became Crookston home which in my early days was a home for the elderly. It was situated at the top end of Crookston Rd at Roughmussel, a couple of minutes from the Hurlet and Nitshill rd. It was just beyond where the present day Lidl store is, and accross the road was the Rolls Royce playing fields and Crookston Bowling Club and Paisley Grammarians Rugby Club. Further back down Crookston Rd was Ross Hall House originally the home of the Lobnitz (shipbuilding) family.From1946/47 until 1982 it was the Scottish Hotel School and now is RossHall private hospital. I remember going to Open days at the Home with my Granny and a friends dad from school was janitor at RossHall. If I can remember these things maybe i'm not as senile as I felt earlier today. Lesley

Hi Lesley

And in between them on Crookston road was/is Leverndale Hospital which previously was HAWKHEAD Asylum for the Govan Parish.

There was a beautiful mosaic on the entrance hall floor of the Hill Admin block of a hawks head on a yellow star. It had to be covered up when they changed the name of the hospital.

Although only a mile across the fields from the Hawkhead Fever Hospital in Paisley, there never was any confusion about where you were going because they served different parishes.

Hawkhead/Leverndale hospital was my training place half a century ago starting in the days when every door in the place was locked and staff had to be like prison warders and carry a muckle great key attached to a chain which, in turn, was attached to your person !
