1814 baptism recorded 1834.....

Post by karenmcc » Mon Mar 12, 2007 12:27 am

Hi All,

Have uploaded the Baptism record of my GGGGgrandfather, James McINTOSH.

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1125

When I opened it for the first time I just scrolled straight down to his name without reading anything else. Was very excited as my GGGGgrandmothers name was directly below his. I have been trying to find her mothers name for quite a while now.

I have then gone back and looked at the rest of the entries, and realized all the others on the page were actually baptised in 1834. My GGGGgrandparents are the only ones on the page born in 1814. They were married in November of 1834. Why would this have happened and is this enough proof of who my GGGGgrandmothers mothers name was.

I have talked about this subject before on TS, Jean WHITES mothers name was not given on her DC or on a Poorlaw application she made, and I was leaning towards the mother shown on this baptism record.

Thanks
Karen McCubbin

Hello Karen

I'm sure the experts will know much more than me - but what a wonderful find :) :) It would seem they perhaps appeared for marriage/banns & presumably could not prove they had been baptised - or didn't know whether or not they had been baptised. It is interesting that the record for your grandmother does not include the "and baptised by ..." which may be a simple omission or she may have known she had been baptised but for some reason the minister wanted to record her at this time.

Do you have the record of the marriage - I wonder if it was the same minister?

Trish

Hi Trish,

Had noticed that Jean did not have anything about being baptised after her name, and wondered if there was any significance to this. I haven't viewed their marriage record. A kind TS member had a look at it for me ages ago to see if there was anything interesting on it, so it's not on my lists of "must haves" at the moment. Their first child was however baptised by Dr McKinlay.

Hi Karen,
Another good OPR for us to view.
Thanks for sharing.
Don't know if you are interested in Dr James MacKinlay, but he was well kent in Killie.

Both the Man and David Strong were ministers in the Low Church.

Hi Karen

What helpful entries on that page; "fourth child and third son of" etc..... wish they were all like that!

Best wishes
Lesley
