Archibald Henderson/Ann McDonald Marriage, Ayrshire,1866....

Post by ihenderson73 » Tue Mar 13, 2007 2:58 pm

Hi All

I've got a marriage extract which states that on 17th August 1866 Archibald Henderson (son of John Henderson and Margaret Stewart) married Ann McDonald (daughter of James McDonald and Isabella Robertson). The certificate also states that Ann McDonald was a widow. Now, in places, her late husband's surname looks like Simpson but may not be.

I'm wondering if anyone out there in genealogy land has any of the following information:
1. A birth record for Ann McDonald;
2. Any clue as to who this mystery first husband might have been - according to the marriage record that I've got, she was only 23 when she married the second time;
3. A death record for Husband #1;

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Could you upload the image to the gallery and we might be able to decipher whether it is Simpson or not?

IGI has a few Ann's born to a couple with those names, but none in or near the right year for her age in 1866. She may not have been registered it being pre-1855.

I couldn't find her 1st marriage on IGI either :(

Maybe someone else will have better luck

Have you found her in the censuses yet? If so, are there any children of an age that they were likely to be from the first marriage? She should be out there somewhere for the censuses of 1851 to 1901 Her death certificate shows that she survived to 1901.

All the best,

Hi Andrew.

I've not been able to find her in the 1841 or 1851 census. However, I'm working on the principal that since she got married the second time at the ripe old age of 23, she probably wasn't married to her first hubby for very long.

The image of the marriage record to her second husband is available in the gallery if you want to have a look at it.

Could this be her in 1851? If so, you get her grandmother as well!

This is probably not related at all, but I just read about the Scots at War website and was rummaging through the Roll of Honour when I read:
* MacDonald DCM, Alexander. b. 1890. Private. 2nd Bn, Black Watch. Scottish. Served with the Black Watch from 1909-15. He was a Piper with the Black Watch, and fought at the Battle of Loos and awarded the Distinguised Conduct Medal for Conspicuous Gallantry. He lost a leg at the Battle. Nineteen months later he died in Cupar, Fife, of peritonitis. He had only been married for three weeks. His wife was Annie MacDonald (nee Simpson). (added 27/04/01)
Simpson and MacDonald are both common names, so it is probably just a coincidence, but thought it might be worth a look for someone more familiar with all the facts.
Lyons and Dyers, McBeans, oh my!

Hi all

Jack, it certainly looks as if the birth record that you've found for Ann McDonald is the correct one, unless of course there are two Ann McDonald's, born 5 years apart to parents who both had exactly the same names. Also, I've reviewed the image that I have of James Henderson's birth record. His mother is listed as Ann Henderson Simpson or McDonald. So, I am assuming that James was Archibald's son. Still want to find the record of the Simpson/McDonald marriage.

Sarah, thanks for your note about her possible grandmother. However, Ann McDonald's mother was Isabella McDonald (nee Robertson), so I don't think it links in. I'll keep digging though.

Heymarky, I'm not sure that your link is related - Ann McDonald became Ann Henderson via being Ann Simpson. Thanks for the thought though.

Thanks to all of you for your contribution. I want to concentrate now on finding the elusive Mr Simpson (if that is indeed his name).

Thank again.

Ian

Ann McDonald - 05/04/1838

Post by ihenderson73 » Wed Mar 14, 2007 1:12 am

Hi Jack

I've done a bit more digging on the movable birthdate of Ann McDonald. I checked on the LDS website, and was able to verify the information that you provided, which is that Ann McDonald was allegedly born on 5th April and baptised 15th April 1838. However, if I search on SP, no such record exists, even when I throw the search open to the whole country for the whole of 1838.

Thanks for the information, but I think that it's flawed. Unfortunately, the search on LDS didn't provide submitter details that I could have used as an additional frame of reference.

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian,

The birth of Ann MacDonald is there on ScotlandsPeople - data same as Jack found above. MacDonald, not McDonald, or to catch either M*cDonald.

All the best,

AndrewP
