Post by pkman3 » Mon Apr 23, 2007 4:26 pm

I am new to talking scot so i am not sure if i have done this right. i am looking for help in deciphering an entry on an opr. It is for a william Dalgleish on June the 21st.

I am not sure of the location or who the witness is. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi pkman3,

Welcome to Talking Scot.

I read it as follows...

William son to George Dalgleish in Carla??? Witness the foresaid persons (referring to the two witnesses for the baptism above) Looks like Jo' (possibly Joseph) Martin and Thomas Forsyth.

Hopefully someone with better eyes can make out more.

Hi,

I think it says "witnesses the foresaid persons" meaning the witnesses on the birth above.
EG John Martin and Thomas Forsyth.

Not sure what the location is though.

Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Hi pkman3,
Welcome to Talking Scot! :D
I make out the location as 'Carlavorock' (possibly what is now written as Caerlaverock?) Note the interesting 'r' in 'foresaid' which is just like the second 'r' in the place name. The 'v' is like the 'v' in 'weaver' in the 17 June birth above.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Pkman3:

Glad you've joined us!

This is how I read it:
June 21
Thomas son to the _____ Thomas Martin in Carla___ parish. Witness Jos Martin & Thomas Forsyth in Clintshurs(?)
Eo Dom Dei
William son to George Dalgleish in Carla___ parish. Witness the foresaid persons

Eo Dom Dei - this notation also appears following June 22, July 12, Aug 22 and Sept 27 records. I am reaching a long way back to my years of Latin, but I would venture that this denotes 'Church __ Lord God'

Without having a gazeteer, I've no clue about the place names, but that will be sorted out quickly by those with a knowledge of the area.

just like to say thanks to all those that have replied.

I dont think i would ever have understood it without your help.

If its ok I would like to ask another question. Now that i have George as Williams Father how can i confirm or find his date of Birth. This is something i have struggled to understand

I have always been lucky with previous research.

Philip.

Thanks for the clarification, Ann. I was thinking (or, not thinking) that I was looking at some sort of abbreviation based on the disjointed script and went off on a tangent.
