Life of a Baxter (baker) and a flesher (butcher)

Post by John Bird » Wed Jul 11, 2007 4:22 am

Hi

My Craw ancestors came from Edinburgh. During the 16th and 17th centuries a number of them were baxters and fleshers. I would like to find out more about the life of a baxter or flesher during those times.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

regards

A flesher wasn't only a butcher; he could also have worked in a slaughterhouse, or a tannery.

hi John
A seach on Google returned these interesting articles (about Dundee, but plenty on the trades in general):
http://www.standrewschurch.btinternet.c ... _Trade.htm
http://www.standrewschurch.btinternet.c ... _Trade.htm

The contents page mentions other Dundee trades which may be of interest to other people: Baker, Cordiner, Glover, Tailor, Bonnet Maker, Flesher, Hammerman, Weaver & Dyer.

Best wishes
