Hi Robert,
I thought that was a bit confusing. This is what I mean.
When searching type in JAMES in first name box, leave last name blank.
for parents type in JANE BURNSIDE on mothers box, leave box for father blank.
Year 1865 +/- 10
region BRITISH ISLES country SCOTLAND county LANARK.
Because this is not an overly common name, there are only 3 results, then you can check census and such to see if any are likely.

Hi David
Trying to follow a line forward in time is always more difficult than the usual family history direction of going backwards in time. Obviously, the more frequently occurring the surname, the more difficult it is....
For anybody who is likely to have married after 1855, a day at NRH or Park Circus, searching every year for potential marriages of a partilcular name can be time consuming but will often reveal positive results, and is not imposssible even with surnames like Smith... it just takes longer and is harder work. Once you have the married name, a death is far more straightforward.
Best wishes
Lesley

I think Park Circus is probably my best bet.
Can you offer a quick run down on the format there? How do they charge? Do you have access to all records? I assume it is paper based?
thanks

You pay £14 for the day - 9.30 - 4. The staff are very helpful and will give you a wee run through.daj wrote:I think Park Circus is probably my best bet.

All records are digitally accessed. The search format is a wee bit different from SP but you get used to it very quickly.
In your case you'd be submitting the female name for a marriage and a rough year then you just scroll through the years looking for a possible. Hopefully you'll have a rough idea of where the marriage may have taken place.
For more modern records I would start with the deaths as they give the mother's maiden name as well as the married name.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Annette
