Re: Anoyone know anything about Eaglesham?
Hi All,
Thanks to all of you for your input and help. A special thanks to Anne H for those links. I went to them and found out that it is indeed the original building.
It was built circa 1790. My GGGGrandfather is listed as living on Montgomery Square in the 1841 census as well as the 1861 census, although on the 1841 census it doesn't give the number of the building. All of his children were born in Eaglesham, my GGGrandmother was born about 1827 so maybe he was in that house at that time too. I am so happy that some people had the foresight to preserve these old houses.
Hi Carol, some of my relatives might have stayed a little longer in Eaglesham. All of my ancestors seen to have converged in Refrewshire from all over Scotland and Ireland by the late 19th century. I wouldn't be a bit surprised that they might have met some of yours at one time.
Aren't the Google maps street view wonderful. What a wonderful tool this is. =D> I just found out about this feature last week. I have been taking virtual tours of the streets where I grew up and now I am starting on Scotland. I doubt that I will be as lucky with the older addresses as I have been with the one in Eaglesham, but at least I will be able to see the area where they lived even though it has changed.
Regards

Hi Sheila,
If you Google you'll find a lot of good links that will give you some background information on Eaglesham and Renfrewshire in general...I was looking through this one last night.
http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/Eagl ... ed-Village
I had at least one of my Russell children born in Eaglesham but have no idea where.
I'd love to be able to find a building that old...just imagine the history.
Regards,
Anne H

Greetings Anne, from New Zealand.
I note your reference to the surname RUSSELL as I read through this post. One William RUSSELL of Egglesham (b.1835) came to NZ, and at Auckland in 1870, married Agnes SHARP (b. Row 1848) though prior to that the family moved through gardening jobs at the big estates in Lanark, and Renfrewshire. Just another of the Clyde Valley SHARP/E's to make it to NZ for a fresh start.
Regards, Alan.

Hi Alan,
This particular family of Russell's didn't have a son William that I'm aware of and they were mainly in the wine & spirit business.
You don't happen to know your William's parents names, do you?
The father of the family I referred to in Eaglesham had three brothers that I haven't been able to find, namely, Robert, William and George...it would be wonderful if your William was related to one of them.
Regards,
Anne H

Looks like the book is currently out of print, but I guess there will still be copies in circulation.momat wrote: I have a book OLD EAGLESHAM published by Stenlake which is informative.

Re: Anoyone know anything about Eaglesham?
Hello Sheila, The Barony of Eaglesham, I've always heard it pronounced Eagle shum, the Eagles is from the Gaelic, eaglais=church. It's an 18th cent' style "Lairds Toon" built in 1796 by the 12th Earl of Eglinton. These Montgomeries aquired the land from Walter the High Steward, founder of the Stewart dynasty. They built the nearby castle of Polnoon and not many of the Earls died in their beds as they feuded with the Cunninghame Earls of Glencairn for generations and kept Ayrshire & Renfrewshire in such turmoil that it made the Highland feuds look like handbags at twenty paces. It was formerly dependant on the handloom weaving and by Victorian times the laird was an Allan Gilmour Esq. The place features in the old song "The Soor Mulk Cairt" which goes something like, "Oh ah'm workin fur a fairmer at a place they cry Polnoon, it's just ootside o Eaglesham that grand auld fashioned toon, at five o clock each mornin ah'm as happy as a lark as ah go hurlin intae Glesga in ma Soor Mulk cairt!" you're lucky there's no sound here! Try the map/photo combo,

Hi John,
Thanks for your info. I wonder why the Scots were so violent in the past? Todays Scots are not that way at all. I also like that song. It will make an interesting and funny addition to the stuff I will be writing about Eaglesham, whichever way it is pronounced.
I know very little about my GGGGrandfather who lived there, so every little bit more makes it more interesting.
Thanks again
