Hi Bill,
I once researched a similar problem in my family. I had a woman married to my relative who used one maiden name until a point in time then changed her maiden name. At first I thought maybe his first wife died and he married another woman but no it was the same woman (marriage date was the same for all 9 children's births.) I eventually found the marriage in the Free Church records so proved that with her first maiden name. But it gave me her residence in 1842 so I could look up 1841 census and found her as a servant to a Soldier, but his surname was the name she later 'adopted'. I'm convinced she was an illegitimate child to this Soldier, and possibly on his death bed (though haven't found his death) admitted this, or could even have been her mothers death, and so she chose her fathers name.
So thinking along similar lines, do you know when Robert's parents passed away? Have you seen the certificates, for any information from them? Does any of this happen about the time of the name change, making one assumption that the two Roberts are one and the same.
If an illegitimate birth you may find the record in the Kirk Session records rather than the OPR, which may also give other information to help you out. Not sure when Scotlandspeople will have them online, otherwise it's a trip to the Archives.
Regards
John

Hi John
I presume you are asking if I know when Robert Storie`s parents passed away ? I`m afraid I don`t. Robert Stories parents were James and Isabella Storie ( Isabellas maiden name was Lees). They are still alive and kicking in the 1871 census.
Eureka John ! Thank you so much !! Whilst typing this letter in reply to you I went back to Scotlandspeople and looked for the death of Isabella Storie. I found she died in 1873. It gave HER parents as John Lees and HER mother as Agnes Lees maiden name CROSBIE !! after over 20 years and only being on this forum for less than 24 hours you have helped me solve a mystery I would have taken to my grave. If I lived closer I would buy you a pint.!!

Well done John
=D> =D> ..........I had gone back to Robert Storie's parents and could see that his mother's surname was Lees but didn't think of going further than that.
I was totally convinced they were one and the same though with all the evidence you had gathered Bill but I think that that wee nugget makes it all the more convincing.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette, you are so right. When I looked at the maiden name of Crosbie on the death certificate my heart was going ten to the dozen and I had to look at it about 5 times before I would believe it; what was so special and the icing on the cake was that the name was spelt Crosbie and not Crosby. I am so glad that the death was in Scotland (where they can see light years ahead) and the mother of the deceased was on the cert but not only that it has the mothers maiden name on too.
