There are various levels of memberships to SCRAN:

http://www.scran.ac.uk/

Home or Personal is currently 13.04 for a year and 8.69 for 6 months.
Other subscriptions vary depending on group size

follow the shop: subscribe link on the left of the page.

I have to say though that many of the images I've looked at [on the free search] were inaccurate ie the California School shown is actually the one that stood at Blackbraes.
That possibly is not SCRAN's fault but rather that of thier sources but still...

Hi Annie:

http://www.scran.ac.uk/info/aboutscran.php

Scran - part of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland - aims to provide educational access to digital materials representing our material culture and history.

The Scran Trust - a registered charity - was formed in 1996 and its founding partners were The National Museums Scotland, The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, The Scottish Museums Council and, by invitation, the Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum.

In its first five years, it engaged in a wide ranging scheme of grant awards which allowed cultural organisations to digitise parts of their collections to be made available for educational purposes.

A Homecoming year specials 1 year £13.04 / 6 months 8.69. I didn't read far enough to see what might be charged for any downloads.

It says there are over 300 institutional members, so it may be worthwhile checking at your local library/college/university to see if it is available there.

Hi Jan
The Scran site is useful for old photographs so you can see how places used to look, general information about lots of things, and some older documents, but it is more useful for background information about places and things, not specifically family research. As the web site states:
"Scran is a charity & online learning resource base with over 360,000 images & media from museums, galleries, archives and the media."

"Scran - part of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland - aims to provide educational access to digital materials representing our material culture and history."

"Images of tigers, Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery, a Degas, a Dali, images of war or whaling, standing stones, a pint of beer, an integrated circuit, or line drawings of an acorn or an adrenal gland demonstrate the range."
It is not very useful for information pertaining to specific families (landed gentry possibly excepted...) or specific people, apart from the famous or well known, when there may be documents or photographs of portraits etc.

There are other specifically Scottish resources on Ancestry such as Newspapers and Periodicals, Directories, Passenger lists etc. It really depends what sort of information you are looking for.

Best wishes
Lesley

Jannette,

One large problem with Ancestry is the transcription errors. They come from the original handwriting being difficult to read or from human error reading and transcribing or sometimes from the computer reading and transcribing.

If you have a specific question on a family or person disappearing between census years, post it under the Census category on the Forum. Give us all the information that you found on the latest census record where you found them and some one of us will try to help you. After a couple of years, you get used to Ancestry and can guess at what a name might be transcribed under. A lot of us just like a good challenge!
